Assystem Germany Deploys Blue Coat ProxySG and ProxyAV Appliances for WAN Optimization and Security

Blue Coat Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:BCSI), the technology leader in Application Delivery Networking, today announced that engineering services provider Assystem Germany has deployed Blue Coat^® ProxySG^® and ProxyAV™ appliances for WAN optimization and Web security to accelerate its regular backup of more than 130 Gigabytes of data. Using ProxySG appliances for WAN optimization, the time required for data backup has been reduced by 65 percent and opening large centralized files now takes only a few seconds instead of several minutes for branch office users.

In its Hamburg-Harburg branch office, 30 to 50 employees develop aircraft parts and other products using 3D CAD tools, and the company backs up its data over a 2.5 Mbps dedicated WAN line every weekend. As the amount of data grew exponentially, the data backup between the headquarters and the branch office could not be accomplished during the course of a weekend and would interfere with important application traffic during the work week. This conflict potentially threatened user productivity and the company’s capacity for disaster recovery.

Scaling the bandwidth of its WAN link was not a cost-effective option for Assystem Germany. Blue Coat ProxySG appliances enabled Assystem Germany to utilize its existing link by optimizing chatty Microsoft protocols that are inefficient over the WAN, a situation that is generally not improved with incremental bandwidth. As a result, the company can now fully back up its branch office data over the same WAN link in just 18 hours rather than the 50 or more required previously. Additionally, Assystem Germany now has increased network flexibility enabling the company to scale its project load.

"Adding more bandwidth while managing extra data backups at the Hamburg-Harburg branch would have been highly complex, ineffective and ultimately cost a great deal more from a three-year perspective,” explains Carsten Peters, IT manager for Assystem Germany. "The Blue Coat solution simplified our data backups without requiring additional bandwidth, making it the right choice for us.”

Two years ago, Assystem Germany deployed Blue Coat ProxySG and ProxyAV appliances to protect against Web-based threats and enforce compliance to corporate IT policies at its Internet gateway. By extending the deployment of ProxySG and ProxyAV appliances to include WAN optimization, Assystem can now optimize and secure the delivery of business-critical applications across its distributed enterprise.
