CEMEX, S.A.B. de C.V. (NYSE: CX), announced today that it has raised
approximately US$750,000 in company contributions to help support
emergency relief efforts in Haiti, with donations from more than 2,500
employees in 29 countries. Additionally, Cemex has undertaken local
support activities and provided humanitarian assistance following last
month’s tragic earthquake. The CEMEX community established a fund to
collect voluntary contributions from its personnel worldwide, with CEMEX
matching every donation received two-for-one. Funds raised will be
directed to the support of its employees, their families and neighboring
communities, and toward homebuilding efforts for people affected by the
earthquake.
CEMEX has 115 employees in Haiti. Through a rapid response effort, the
company has delivered three shipments of basic goods from Mexico and the
Dominican Republic. Humanitarian assistance has thus far consisted of
food, home supplies, medicine and medical care. Additionally, CEMEX made
available its heavy machinery in Haiti to assist relief teams in their
efforts. Also, CEMEX assigned its vessel "Marianela” with the task of
delivering 90 tons of direct aid sent from Mexico, which was gathered by
the CEMEX community and its customers.
With three cement import terminals, two of which are located in the
Port-au-Prince area, and a 180 distributor network, CEMEX is one of the
major cement suppliers in Haiti. The facilities suffered minimal damage
and both terminals in Port-au-Prince restarted operations as soon as the
construction activity resumed. Through its operating network in the
Americas, including facilities in the Dominican Republic, the company
has and will continue to supply its products into the Haitian market.
CEMEX plans to continue to contribute to the rebuilding of Haiti,
including through the extension of the company’s social
self-construction programs aimed at home building for low-income
families.
