At the 2010 International CES® (Consumer Electronics Show),
Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE:DLB) is demonstrating how its
technologies transform sound and elevate entertainment in the living
room, on the PC, and on mobile devices. Dolby is showing the latest
entertainment devices that feature advanced audio, including
internet-connected televisions and Blu-ray Disc™ players, PCs,
smartphones, and game consoles. Dolby will also debut the first set-top
boxes that feature Dolby® Volume.
"Great sound brings realism, excitement, and emotion to entertainment
whether you are watching a movie on your mobile device or streaming to
your TV,” said Ramzi Haidamus, Executive Vice President, Sales and
Marketing, Dolby Laboratories. "At CES we look forward to demonstrating
how Dolby innovations transform the world’s most popular and innovative
entertainment products. No matter what device or media you choose, the
Dolby logo is your guarantee of a great audio experience.”
Delivering Total Immersion in Home Entertainment
Located at booth 9827 in the Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention
Center, Dolby is highlighting set-top boxes, televisions, and
audio-video receivers featuring Dolby Volume, a breakthrough premium
audio processing technology providing a consistent volume level across
all content sources and creating a superior listening experience at any
level. Some devices on display featuring Dolby Volume will be new
Motorola digital set-top boxes, new Toshiba REGZA™ series LCD
televisions, and a broad array of premium audio-video receivers and
processors.
Dolby is demonstrating globally-available smartphones from LG®
(including the LG EnV Touch and the LG Chocolate Touch) which feature
Dolby Mobile. Dolby Mobile brings depth and richness, and clean,
powerful bass, delivering a more immersing and engaging listening
experience on the go.
Dolby’s booth showcases new devices and media which support Dolby
Digital Plus high-definition audio, including the VUDU™ streaming movie
service. VUDU uses Dolby Digital Plus to deliver 5.1 surround sound for
its service on televisions from LG, Mitsubishi, Samsung™, Sanyo, Sharp,
and Toshiba, as well as Blu-ray Disc players from LG and Vizio. Dolby
Digital Plus is a scalable technology designed specifically to meet the
evolving demands of content delivery. For broadcast and streamed
entertainment media applications where bandwidth is at a premium, Dolby
Digital Plus is measurably more efficient than Dolby Digital allowing
broadcast operators to deliver more HD movies and programming with
spectacular surround sound. Dolby Digital Plus is also an important
feature in the Blu-ray Disc format, supporting primary 7.1-channel audio
as well as multichannel secondary audio support.
Dolby Digital Plus has been adopted by the world’s leading TV and
set-top box makers to deliver surround sound for next-generation
television. Today, more than 2,000 television models from 19 TV
manufacturers offer Dolby Digital Plus, including Sony® and
LG who are announcing new televisions for the European market.
Additionally, more than 50 set-top boxes from 26 set-top box
manufacturers support Dolby Digital Plus. France, Italy, England, Spain,
and Sweden have all established Dolby Digital Plus as the broadcast
audio standard for HDTV services.
Dolby is displaying Dolby TrueHD, a lossless compression technology
developed for high-definition disc-based media, and an important
technology in next-generation home theater systems. More than 560
Blu-ray Disc movie titles from 33 studios feature Dolby TrueHD,
including Paramount’s Star Trek, one of the year’s best-selling
releases. On display at the Dolby booth will be several original props
from Star Trek 2009 including scale models of the U.S.S.
Enterprise and the actual captain’s chair from the movie set.
Dolby is also demonstrating Dolby Pro Logic® IIz, a matrix
decoding audio technology, adding a new sense of depth and dimension to
home entertainment by employing front height channels in a 7.1- or a
9.1-channel audio experience. Introduced last year on audio-video
receivers (AVRs) from Denon, Integra, Marantz, and Onkyo, Dolby Pro
Logic IIz is now available in select new AVRs from Sony. Dolby Pro Logic
IIz, recognized by Popular Science magazine as one of the Top 100
innovations of the year, won the coveted "Best of What's New" award in
the home entertainment category.
Elevating Entertainment Beyond the Living Room
The Dolby booth highlights technologies that deliver outstanding audio
for PCs, smartphones, and online games, including Dolby Digital Plus,
bringing cinema-quality surround sound to the Windows® 7
operating system.
Four of the world’s top five PC manufacturers support Dolby’s PC
Entertainment Experience, a suite of technologies enabling PCs to
deliver a home theater experience with Dolby Home Theater v.3.,
including Sony which is announcing new F Series VAIO® laptops
and Lenovo, introducing the latest Ideapad laptops.
Medion is also showcasing new PCs with Dolby Home Theater®
v.3, including the Medion Touch, an all-in-one Desktop PC. The Dolby
booth also features netbooks from Acer and Lenovo which use Dolby
Headphone to deliver surround sound through any pair of headphones.
Finally, Dolby is highlighting Dolby Axon, a voice
communication technology designed to enable surround sound voice
chat for online games. Dolby Axon provides a clearer, more realistic,
and more immersing game experience.
The Dolby Axon desktop client brings improved voice clarity and surround
sound to a stand-alone chat application designed for online gamers. In
addition to making voice chat more intelligible, the desktop
client features an easy-to-use graphical interface that allows users to
create, join, and interact in visual chat rooms. The Dolby Axon desktop
client was recognized as an honoree for the 2010 International CES
Innovations Design and Engineering Awards.
