Eclipsys Corporation®, (NASDAQ:ECLP), The Outcomes Company®,
today announced that Eclipsys’ pharmacy solution has continued to make
strong gains in market share since its market introduction three years
ago. The number of organizations leveraging the native integration
between Eclipsys’ pharmacy system and its market-leading computerized
physician order entry (CPOE) solution doubled in 2008, with live clients
projected to increase year-over-year by another 65 percent at the close
of 2009. More than 80 percent of Eclipsys pharmacy clients also utilize
the company’s CPOE solution. Among these pharmacy clients, 75 percent
have achieved a 50 percent or higher CPOE adoption rate.
The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP), one of the top 10
hospitals in the nation, is one of the latest healthcare organizations
to activate the Sunrise Pharmacy™ integrated pharmacy information
system. The successful go live, which replaces a competitive legacy
pharmacy solution, builds upon HUP’s 100 percent adoption of Eclipsys’
computerized physician order entry (CPOE) solution for more informed
clinical decision making and support. Plans call for a continued rollout
of Eclipsys’ medication management solutions at HUP and at other
University of Pennsylvania Health System hospitals.
"As a Magnet hospital, we have an intense focus on patient care and
safety, and in reviewing replacement pharmacy solutions, we opted for
Eclipsys because it offered the most viable solution to meet those
goals,” said Michael Restuccia, vice president and chief information
officer, University of Pennsylvania Health System. "We are strong
believers in integration, and the integration between the Eclipsys
pharmacy solution and CPOE system provides us with the foundation for
the safety benefits that come with closed loop medication
administration. It effectively links our caregivers with our pharmacists
for enhanced communications and collaboration because they are viewing
the same screen and using a single database for patients’ drug therapy.”
HUP’s activation of the pharmacy solution became a next step for its
physicians, who have accepted the new system as an enhanced ordering
capability. In addition, HUP pharmacists are now afforded more mobility
and efficiency in viewing orders and have the ability to spend more time
with physicians and patients.
Restuccia added, "In a complex environment, such as HUP, we treat
extremely high acuity patients, and that type of treatment environment
requires a very precise and easy-to-use system to gain physician
adoption. Eclipsys’ CPOE system is well-suited in complex environments,
as well as standard acute care environments. It’s because of that level
of CPOE adoption that the pharmacy activation became so seamless within
the physician community.”
Pharmacy Activations Support Meeting Medication Management
Component of ARRA
"In light of the longer-term impact of the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act (ARRA), which ultimately translates ‘meaningful use’
into a pay for performance reimbursement scenario, healthcare
organizations need to reconsider their levels of clinical system
integration,” said Jay Deady, Eclipsys’ executive vice president of
Client Solutions. "The superior integration between our pharmacy and
CPOE solution not only offers tremendous patient safety and workflow
efficiencies, we believe it will be a key factor for our clients in
meeting the medication management component of ARRA in the near term,
and more important, the outcome requirements as the bar will continue to
rise.”
In addition to HUP, clients to recently adopt the Eclipsys pharmacy
solution include:
-
Athens Regional Medical Center (Athens, GA)
-
Baylor Medical Center at Grapevine (Grapevine, TX)
-
Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center (Carson City, NV)

A key factor to the market appeal of the Eclipsys pharmacy solution lies
in its integration with the company’s CPOE solution, Sunrise Acute
Care™. Working in concert via a single database, the two systems enable
integrated handoffs between clinicians and pharmacists resulting in
fewer errors and accelerated time to treatment. In addition, according
to the 2008 "Top 20 Best in KLAS Award: Software and Professional
Services” report, issued by KLAS Enterprises, Inc., 92 percent of KLAS
respondents indicated they would buy the Eclipsys pharmacy solution
again.
Sunrise Pharmacy, a key component of Eclipsys’ Sunrise Medication
Management™ solution, enables pharmacists to quickly and easily enter,
review and verify physician orders. The single application screen view
helps the pharmacist to effectively manage multiple tasks and save time.
Shared real-time information enhances the pharmacist’s ability to
deliver the patient’s medications with greater accuracy and in less
time, even when a physician goes back and modifies or cancels an order
placed earlier. In addition, advanced clinical decision support for
checking medication contraindications helps to reduce adverse drug
events.
