ORBCOMM Inc. (Nasdaq: ORBC), a global satellite data communications
company focused on two-way Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications,
today announced that Elon Musk, well-known high-tech visionary,
entrepreneur and philanthropist, will serve as a keynote speaker at
ORBCOMM’s 2011 Global Solutions Conference at the Park Hyatt Aviara in
Carlsbad, CA, from October 12-14. Mr. Musk will join Captain James
Lovell, NASA legend and commander of Apollo 13, who will also be a
keynote speaker at the conference.
Mr. Musk is the CEO and Product Architect of Tesla Motors and the
CEO/CTO of Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX). At SpaceX, Mr. Musk
is the chief designer, overseeing development of rockets and spacecraft
for missions to Earth orbit and ultimately to other planets. In 2008,
SpaceX’s Falcon 1 rocket became the first privately developed
liquid-fueled rocket to reach orbit. Later that same year, SpaceX’s
Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft won a $1.6 billion NASA contract
to provide a commercial replacement for the cargo transport function of
the Space Shuttle, which retired earlier this year. In 2010, SpaceX
became the first commercial company to successfully recover a spacecraft
from Earth orbit with its Dragon spacecraft.
In addition, Mr. Musk is the non-executive chairman and principal
shareholder of SolarCity, which he helped create. SolarCity is now the
leading provider of solar power systems in the United States.
Prior to SpaceX, Mr. Musk co-founded PayPal, the world’s leading
Internet payment system, and served as the company’s Chairman and CEO.
Before PayPal, Mr. Musk co-founded Zip2, a provider of Internet software
to the media industry.
In 2009, the National Space Society awarded Mr. Musk its Von Braun
Trophy, given for leadership of the most significant achievement in
space. In 2010, Mr. Musk was the youngest recipient of the Auto
Executive of the Year Innovator Award for his work at Tesla Motors. He
was also named to the Time 100 list of most influential people in the
world in 2010.
"Elon Musk brings a unique blend of innovation, entrepreneurial spirit
and a wildly successful career in space-related technology and high-tech
ventures to this year’s Global Solutions Conference,” said Marc
Eisenberg, Chief Executive Officer of ORBCOMM. "We look forward to
hearing his insight and vision on how to make a global impact in today’s
rapidly changing universe. With attendance expected to be double that of
last year’s conference and heavy hitters like Musk and Lovell as our
keynote speakers, we are excited to host what promises to be a
high-energy, high-impact event for the ORBCOMM community.”
ORBCOMM’s Global Solutions Conference is an annual event that celebrates
the company’s growth and leadership in the M2M market, educates its
customers and partners about new developments in the ORBCOMM world and
encourages collaboration and synergy within the ORBCOMM community.
ORBCOMM expects over 200 customers, partners, manufacturers, application
developers, and executives from more than 15 countries to attend this
year’s conference, which features the theme, Driving the M2M
