Itron, Inc. (NASDAQ:ITRI)
announced today that it has been
selected by Larsen & Toubro, the largest construction company in India,
to supply residential water meters as part of an infrastructure upgrade
project in Delhi. Over the course of the 18-month project, Itron will
provide 250,000 water meters to accurately measure water usage in the
metropolitan area—the largest contract for Itron in India to date.
Responsible for the delivery and distribution of drinking water in the
region, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) oversees approximately 1.9 million
connections in Delhi. Historically, consumers have been charged for
water service on an estimated average basis, not on actual consumption.
In addition, over 60 percent of these connections are either unmetered
or have defective meters installed, resulting in tremendous water waste
across the metropolitan area. With both of these factors in mind, the
DJB launched a global tender for the installation of 250,000 water
meters to allow their customers to have better monitoring and oversight
of their water consumption while improving the overall efficiency of
water supply, and ensuring water loss is minimized. Larsen & Toubro was
awarded the contract and the company will install international standard
water meters provided by Itron. This contract strengthens Itron’s
presence in Delhi as this project follows an earlier one of which
100,000 water meters were delivered to DJB.
As per Larsen & Toubro Ltd, "Itron’s proven, reliable and accurate water
metering technology was the key factor in our vendor selection process.
With Itron’s meters, we will be able to provide a foundation for DJB’s
customers to more closely monitor their consumption, ultimately allowing
for better management of this precious resource.”
"Itron is proud to extend our services and our technology to DJB and the
residents of Delhi, and we’re honoured to be a part of the move towards
water conservation in Delhi,” said Marcel Regnier, president and COO,
Itron Water. "These meters will be assembled at our newly inaugurated
water meter factory in Dehradun and this significant project reinforces
our position in the Indian market.”
