Liberty Global, Inc. ("Liberty Global”) (NASDAQ: LBTYA, LBTYB and LBTYK)
and European Schoolnet, the network of 30 Ministries of Education in
Europe and beyond, have today launched a pilot for ‘The eSafety Label’,
a European wide online safety support and accreditation standard for
schools. The initiative aims to further embed eSafety and media literacy
across elementary and secondary schools in Europe.
The eSafety Label will provide an online portal for schools to be able
to review their eSafety practices against internationally-agreed
standards. Schools can be accredited as an ‘eSafety-certified school’ by
completion of a self-assessment process. Schools will also receive a
suggested action plan to enable them to further develop their levels of
eSafety practice.
Launching today, on Safer Internet Day 2012, the pilot program runs
until the end of this school year. Schools will have the opportunity to
test the prototype portal and the new assessment and accreditation model.
Manuel Kohnstamm, Managing Director of Public Policy & Communications
for Liberty Global, said: "We are proud to be one of the key founders of
‘The eSafety Label’, which gives schools the necessary tools to review
their eSafety standards and supports them in educating pupils on eSafety
issues. It teaches them appropriate behaviors and critical thinking
skills to remain safe online, in and beyond the context of the
classroom. We are hopeful that the eSafety Label will encourage schools
to strive for a high level of eSafety and will increasingly become ‘the’
online safety accreditation standard for schools across Europe.”
"Connecting Generations”
This year's Safer Internet Day theme "Connecting Generations” aims to
invite people of all ages from young children to parents and
grandparents to "discover the digital world together…safely”. Connecting
Generations
looks at the reach of the online world across all age
groups and cultures and encourages families to work together to stay
safe online. Tech savvy youngsters can teach their elders how to use new
technologies, while grandparents can draw on their life experiences to
advise younger generations on how to stay safe online, as they discover
the digital world together.
Neelie Kroes, Vice President of the European Commission for Digital
Agenda, said: "The Internet is one of the best places for kids to be.
You can socialize, play, learn and create; and a world of information
and opportunity is just a few clicks away. I want everyone - parents,
teachers, children, NGOs and policy makers - to work together, so all
kids' online experiences are positive ones. So wherever you are, however
you are taking part in Safer Internet Day, I wish you the best of luck
today, and in the future."
Joint initiative
The eSafety Label is a multi-stakeholder project and includes European
Commission backed European Schoolnet, four companies (Liberty Global,
Kaspersky Lab, Microsoft, Telefonica) and European Education Ministries
(Belgium-Flanders, Italy and Portugal). The project has received further
backing from the Ministries of Education and educational organisations
in multiple countries across Europe. The launch of the eSafety Label
marks the 9th Safer Internet Day, a European Commission
backed initiative and is celebrated by Liberty Global and its cable
operations through various initiatives across its European footprint.
Digital Confidence
The eSafety Label is perfectly aligned with Liberty Global’s Corporate
Responsibility program with a focus on Digital Confidence: ‘Protecting
Minors,’ ‘Digital Inclusion’, and ‘Data Privacy’. Another key element in
this program is our cooperation with Insafe, the awareness raising
network of the European Commission’s Safer Internet Program. Through
this partnership, Liberty Global has printed over a million copies of
the Internet Safety Toolkit in 20 languages, and distributed them across
its European footprint.
Liberty Global is also a founding member of the Industry Coalition to
make a better and safer internet for children, announced in December of
last year by European Commission Vice President Neelie Kroes. Priority
actions of the coalition include making it easier to report harmful
content, ensuring privacy settings are age-appropriate, and offering
wider options for parental control, reflecting the needs of a generation
that is going online at an increasingly young age.
Safer Internet Day
Safer Internet Day is a yearly event celebrated in over 80 countries in
the month of February and organized by Insafe. February 7, 2012 is the 9th
edition of the event. As a ‘Gold’ European Schoolnet partner of Safer
Internet Day 2012, Liberty Global and its operations, together with
Insafe, celebrate the day in many countries with local internet safety
activities.
