Residents of New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood who patron the
local MoneyGram store to send money to family, friends or pay bills were
recently confronted with a surprise – MoneyGram was gone. The company’s
flagship store has relocated one block east to 503 West 181st
Street. The new MoneyGram shop is expected to generate more foot
traffic, as eight city bus lines stop near the area every seven minutes.
MoneyGram (NYSE:MGI), a leading global money transfer provider, gathered
today at its new Washington Heights location, which also will house the
company’s New York administrative offices, for an event to celebrate the
move. MoneyGram officials Pete Ohser, vice president of retail chains;
Juan Melendez, vice president of partnership sales; Robert Taylor,
director of regional partnerships; and Carlos Viscarra, manager of
regional partnerships attended the ceremony, along with members of the
local community.
"We love this neighborhood and we’re thrilled our move was only down the
street,” said Melendez. "MoneyGram didn’t move far, but it’s a move that
will go a long way in helping us create a more efficient operating
environment with improved customer service. The short move ensures we
remain just as convenient for our current customers and become visible
to new customers.”
The Washington Heights neighborhood is comprised of several ethnic
groups, predominately from the Dominican Republic. New York City is
considered the top send corridor for the Dominican Republic. Other key
remittance markets served by the store are Ecuador, Mexico and Honduras.
In addition to the new flagship retail location, MoneyGram operates 15
more branches throughout New York City.
