Phoenix Technologies Joins Industry Leaders in Support of Microsoft Network Access Protection Technologies; Company Brings Best-of-breed Device Authentication to Policy Enforcement Platform Architecture

    Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 26, 2005--Phoenix Technologies(R) Ltd. (Nasdaq:PTEC) today announced it will support Microsoft's Network Access Protection (NAP) technologies through its advanced device authentication software. NAP, a policy enforcement platform, will be part of the next version of the Windows Server operating system, code named "Longhorn." It will allow administrators to monitor and control computer access to corporate networks based on policy compliance.
"The prevention of network access by rogue devices and unauthorized machines has become a network security imperative," said Steve Anderson, senior director in the Windows server group at Microsoft. "The continued growth of mobile computing and mobile computing devices opens the door for network attacks from never-before-seen sources. We are pleased that Phoenix Technologies brings with them an offering that enables device authentication and the ability to set and enforce organizational policies to complement and strengthen the overall NAP platform."
Through broad partnerships with industry leaders in fields such as anti-virus, patch management and systems management, Microsoft has developed the Network Access Protection technologies to deliver comprehensive solutions that protect corporate assets, control the spread of viruses and ensure policy compliance. Phoenix provides a security framework through the Phoenix TrustConnector(TM) device authentication software that integrates well with Network Access Protection to enforce security policies at the end points. TrustConnector establishes a unique identity to any device and enables the authentication of devices before enforcing the policies. This ensures only authorized devices can access the network and that policies are enforced only on devices that belong to the network.
"With TrustConnector and Network Access Protection technology, organizations will be assured that only authorized and compliant devices have access to their network," said Michael D. Goldgof, senior vice president and general manager of the corporate marketing and products division for Phoenix Technologies. "Our support of the Network Access Protection technology in our range of security offerings, including TrustConnector, will allow our device OEM partners to build strong security into new devices as well as enable enterprises to enhance security of their current installed base."
Phoenix TrustConnector complements traditional user authentication methods -- such as passwords, tokens, smart cards and biometrics -- to ensure that only authorized users, using authorized devices, can attach to the network. This combination of user and device authentication is unique in the security industry. It is the key to thwarting virtually any type of illegitimate access -- from employees unwittingly logging in through their virus-riddled home machines to the most sophisticated identity thieves. TrustConnector is an inexpensive, cryptography-based solution that can be installed on existing Windows machines, enabling organizations to dramatically improve security without investing in new hardware.
Phoenix is also an active contributing member in the Trusted Network Connect subgroup of the Trusted Computing Group (TCG), as well as a member of the Cisco Network Admission Control (NAC) program.
