ICICS 2011, a biennial event, will take place in Singapore from December
13-16, 2011. The theme for this year’s conference is "Sustainable
Infocomm Systems.”
Dr. Laroia’s presentation titled "Internet for the Social Beings - The
Future of the Internet?” will describe a proximate Internet – a network
of all devices that are in physical proximity to a person. It will focus
on a new peer-to-peer airlink technology that was designed to enable the
proximate Internet and the challenges such a design had to overcome.
Sonus’ Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Laroia is
a well-recognized expert in current and next-generation wireless
broadband technologies. He joined Sonus from Qualcomm, where he served
as senior vice president as a result of the company’s acquisition of
Flarion Technologies in January 2006. Previously, he was the founder and
CTO of Flarion Technologies where he and his team designed the first
all-IP mobile wireless data system based on Orthogonal Frequency
Division Multiplexing (OFDM).
Prior to launching Flarion in 2000, Dr. Laroia was with Lucent
Technologies Bell Laboratories, joining the prestigious Mathematical
Sciences Research Center in 1992. He received his Ph.D. and Master's
degrees from the University of Maryland, College Park and a Bachelor's
degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi – all in
electrical engineering. His thesis also contributed to V.34, the ITU
voice-band modem international standard. Dr. Laroia has 145 issued
patents and more than 300 pending. Additionally, he was inducted to the
University of Maryland, College Park Innovations Hall of Fame and has
won numerous industry awards including the IIT Delhi Distinguished
Alumni Award. He is also a Fellow of the IEEE.
