Only Stores®
(NYSE:NDN) will help support Earth Day 2009 by promoting the use of
reusable bags to consumers while shopping at its 275 stores. The stores
offer reusable bags for 99.99 cents in convenient sizes and assorted
colors to accommodate all shopping needs.
"While we recognize that consumers come to our stores for great values,
we want them to know that we offer savings on eco-friendly products. As
we move forward, we are excited to bring more environmentally friendly
products at exceptional values. We believe our stores can be successful
in promoting environmental awareness and a cost saving message to the
mainstream consumer,” said Eric Schiffer, CEO of 99¢ Only Stores.
As a retail business, the company recognizes the importance of taking
part in sustainability efforts. 99¢ Only Stores has been a longtime
major retail participant of "A Day without a Bag,” an annual event
organized by Heal the Bay, a nonprofit, environmental organization that
urges consumers to forgo one-use plastic or paper grocery bags in favor
of reusable bags. As part of its commitment to help educate consumers on
environmentally friendly alternatives, the company is piloting a
reusable bag program in a selected number of stores to incentivize
customers to use reusable bags versus plastic bags. The company has
donated over 9,999 reusable bags to consumers within the last two years.
In addition, to promote better environmental practices, the company has
implemented a reverse logistics program in all of its stores and
distribution centers for recycling and/or re-use of materials including
cardboard boxes, plastic packaging items, plastic wrap, plastic bags,
plastic crates, bread trays and wood pallets which are either sent back
to recycling centers or put back into use again.
The company continues to focus on implementing environmentally friendly
programs to help raise awareness of social and environmental issues in
communities. Visit the company’s website for more information on the
reverse logistics program at www.99only.com/99green.
