SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) --
Bemis shares rose 6% to $31.85 early Wednesday, landing the stock among the top percentage gainers on the S&P 500. Bemis said it earned a fourth-quarter profit of 45 cents a share, excluding charges. Analysts polled by FactSet had expected 39 cents. Bemis makes packaging materials for food makers and has been struggling with higher resin costs and slower demand for its materials. It said higher food prices throughout 2011 curtailed demand for its customers' products. In response, Bemis said it closed five facilities this month, a move to reduce its fixed costs and improve profit. The Wisconsin-based company plans to invest in facilities in China and Brazil. Bemis shares are off 2% over the last 12 months.Market Pulse Stories are Rapid-fire, short news bursts on stocks and markets as they move. Visit MarketWatch.com for more information on this news.
