Clear Channel Outdoor Holdings, Inc. today announced that its Mexico
division has launched its SmartBike sharing program in Mexico City, the
first program of its kind in the country. It will be accessible from
bike stations that Clear Channel Outdoor installs and maintains at 114
locations, convenient for commuters throughout the city. The initial
phase of the bike program will start with a fleet of 1,100 bikes, and is
designed to accommodate a gradual increase of up to 6,000 bikes at 400
stations.
"In recent years, the Mexico City government has taken steps to make the
city more bicycle-friendly, and this new bike sharing program will offer
residents a healthy, environmentally-safe transportation alternative,”
said Jorge Borobia, General Manager, Clear Channel Mexico.
With the addition of Mexico City, as well as another recently launched
program in Kayseri, Turkey, Clear Channel Outdoor is now operating 14
bike sharing programs around the world. Over eight million trips have
been taken on the bikes by a combination of more than 180,000 users
globally.
In the age of environmental consciousness, Clear Channel’s bike sharing
programs provide an extremely efficient transportation alternative that
is ecologically friendly. Based on the carbon emissions of an average
car, the miles travelled on Clear Channel’s SmartBike systems around the
world have eliminated 1.23 million tons of carbon emissions worldwide.
"Our SmartBike systems are increasingly being recognized as a critical
form of urban transport with the potential for dramatically reducing
urban street congestion, while at the same time contributing to the
protection of our environment. We are particularly excited about
launching our first Latin American bike share program,” said Paul Meyer,
President and CEO of Clear Channel Outdoor for the Americas. "Over 72.5
million kilometers are traveled yearly through our bikes share programs,
approximately the distance of 3,000 trips around the world!”
