Computer Programs and Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CPSI), a leading provider
of healthcare information solutions, announced today that it had
executed agreements to install systems in two Louisiana facilities,
Riverland Medical Center in Ferriday and Jackson Parish Hospital in
Jonesboro.
The two facilities received funding from the Louisiana Department of
Health and Hospitals for the purchase of the CPSI system. The grant
money is being provided by the State through the Louisiana Rural Health
Coalition to encourage rural hospitals to participate in the Louisiana
Health Information Exchange. The ability to participate actively in the
Louisiana Health Information Exchange is a requirement for a hospital to
receive the grant.
The Louisiana Rural Health Information Exchange was established to
connect rural hospitals into a network that will enable health care
professionals to access medical record information from network
participants. The goal of the project is to encourage the adoption and
utilization of electronic health records.
The two new facilities will be joining 14 other CPSI clients in the
Louisiana coalition. CPSI is the information technology provider to more
coalition participants than any other healthcare IT provider.
"We are proud that Riverland Medical Center and Jackson Parish Hospital
have chosen CPSI as their information technology partner,” said Boyd
Douglas, CPSI’s president and chief executive officer. "CPSI is
committed to providing our hospital clients with the technology that
will not only allow them to meet their mission of providing quality
patient care, but also positions them to take advantage of the benefits
of participation in health information exchanges.”
Mr. Douglas also pointed out that CPSI is working to connect several
other current clients to regional networks. The Company is currently
engaged with ten health information exchange initiatives in nine states
and hopes to development relationships with other regional networks to
offer participation to other CPSI clients.
"Early preparation has been key,” added Mr. Douglas. To that end, CPSI
has participated in Connectathons sponsored by Integrating the
Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) and the Interoperability Showcase sponsored
by the Health Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) and
IHE. Both events are open to health information technology providers and
offer participants the opportunity to interact with other vendor systems
in the sharing of patient demographic and clinical data across a
simulated regional network.
"Active participation in these events provided CPSI with valuable
practical experience,” explained Mr. Douglas. "Before virtually all of
the current regional initiatives began, multi-vendor demonstration
events provided the opportunity to look outside of individual systems
and help shape the direction of interoperability.”
In closing, Mr. Douglas added, "Looking to the future, participation in
regional networks will prepare our hospital clients for the future
Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN).” Under the current
national initiative, regional networks will be interconnected to form
the national network.
