Background
On Monday, January 21, 2008, one thousand volunteers from
throughout the Sacramento region will join together to celebrate the
birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by volunteering at over 15 different community improvement projects.
A multi-generational and diverse group of volunteers from throughout the
Sacramento region will work on high-impact, hands-on service projects;
such as cleaning Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard; providing disaster
preparedness information; landscaping, sorting donations, and other
activities to spruce up schools and community centers that provide
social services for their neighborhoods.
Hands On Sacramento, a program of Community Services Planning Council,
is spearheading the event in partnership with intercultural
organizations, businesses and nonprofit and public agencies. Sacramento –
was chosen as one of 5 cities in the nation by the Corporation for
National and Community Service to carry out the King Day of Service 2008.
"Dr. Martin Luther King dedicated his life to
helping Americans of all backgrounds achieve equality of treatment,
opportunity and responsibility. He encouraged citizens to contribute to
their communities by uniting and taking action,”
said Nancy Findeisen, CEO of Community Services Planning Council. "Sacramentans
are keeping his dream alive by dedicating their time and talents helping
others.” Community Sponsors
