Matson Navigation Company has been recognized as a Laureate by the
Computerworld Honors Program in the transportation category for its
Integrated Document Management (IDM) initiative. IDM has successfully
streamlined operations and eliminated paper-based processes across Matson’s
business units while simultaneously reducing costs and improving
customer satisfaction. For two decades, Computerworld Honors has
acknowledged those individuals and organizations that have used
information technology to benefit society.
"Matson is very proud to have been recognized
by Computerworld Honors for its IDM initiative,”
said Peter Weis, vice president and chief information officer, who
accepted the award on Matson’s behalf at a
formal ceremony held in Washington, D.C. in June. "Leveraging
strategic technologies across all business units is a cornerstone of
Matson’s IT strategy and we’re
gratified to see our success with IDM recognized as a best practice. IDM’s
approach to enterprise content management enables Matson employees to
work more efficiently and productively from a single technology platform.”
Weis emphasized the wide ranging benefits of the initiative to the
Matson organization: "In vessel engineering,
Matson now manages all engineering drawings and repair manuals
electronically, thus improving productivity, saving physical space and
reducing costs. Finance now handles the flow of invoices through the
accounts payable system using IDM, and our logistics unit, Matson
Integrated Logistics, has incorporated IDM into its custom-developed
operating platform so that all documents associated with a customer
shipment are accessible with a single click. We fully expect IDM’s
growth within Matson to continue in the coming years. Equally important,
as an ISO 14001-certified organization, Matson continually evaluates the
environmental impact of our operations. IDM has contributed positively
to our long-standing environmental objective to reduce paper consumption
and conserve natural resources.”
IDM has been developed using EMC’s Documentum
product suite, which enables companies such as Matson to provide
centralized document management, integrated workflow, and collaboration
capabilities across the organization.
The Computerworld Honors Program unites Chairmen and CEOs of the world’s
foremost information technology companies to recognize the most
outstanding user achievements in technology each year. The technology
achievements honored by this program are preserved and protected in
national archives, and in over 350 universities, museums, and research
institutions throughout the world.
Matson provides ocean transportation services to Hawaii, Guam, China and
