Rackable
Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:RACK), a
leading provider of servers and storage products for large-scale data
centers, today announced the immediate availability of servers based on
the new Quad-Core AMD Opteron™ processors
(codenamed "Shanghai”).
Rackable Systems will offer a wide selection of server models that will
use the new 45nm Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors to help increase
energy efficiency and further improve performance on server and
workstation application workloads that matter most to customers.
"The new generation of Quad-Core AMD Opteron
processors once again raises the bar for price-performance-per-watt in
an existing data center footprint, compared to previous generations of
AMD Opteron processors,” said Giovanni
Coglitore, chief technology officer at Rackable Systems. "AMD
continues to integrate intelligent, energy-saving technologies like
Enhanced AMD PowerNow!™ technology and AMD
CoolCore™ technology into its processors.
When coupled with our most energy-efficient server designs to date, we
can help reduce overall power consumption during non-peak workloads and
lower the total operational cost in our customers’
datacenters.”
Beyond having four cores, Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors feature
Direct Connect Architecture, which uses high bandwidth interconnect
links that allow processors to connect directly with others in the
configuration, the I/O subsystem and the main memory banks, helping
reduce bottlenecks inherent in traditional front-side bus architectures.
Combined with Rackable Systems’
industry-leading energy efficient server and storage designs, the new
Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors are expected to further increase AMD’s
performance-per-watt leadership.
"AMD and Rackable Systems have a long history
of delivering innovative and energy efficient technology to directly
address customer demand for added performance within an existing
infrastructure,” said Patrick Patla, vice
president and general manager, Server and Workstation division, AMD
(NYSE:AMD). "Our newest Quad-Core AMD Opteron
processors, with enhanced performance-per-watt capabilities, help enable
lower power consumption for Rackable Systems’
customers while providing optimal performance in critical workloads such
as web serving and High Performance Computing.”
Ideal for applications ranging from cloud computing to High Performance
Computing, and in industries including financial services, oil and gas
and digital media, Rackable Systems’ broad
range of server and storage products feature easier serviceability,
maximum density and greater thermal efficiency to reduce overall
operational expenditures. Supported server and storage models include a
wide selection of 1U, 2U, 3U and 4U servers in either half-depth or
standard-full depth form factors.
