Third Wave Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: TWTI) today announced that the
company’s HPV high-risk screening test has
achieved European CE (Conformité Européene)
Marking certification. The test detects the presence of 14 high-risk
types of human papillomavirus, or HPV, the virus that causes nearly all
cervical cancers. It is used in the routine screening of women for
cervical cancer.
The CE Mark certifies that Third Wave’s HPV
test has met European Union (EU) safety, health, environmental and
consumer protection requirements. The certification will allow Third Wave’s
HPV test to be marketed in the EU and other countries elsewhere that
recognize the mark.
"The CE Marking certification of Third Wave’s
HPV test is an important milestone for both the company’s
HPV product plan and our expansion in the European market,”
said Kevin T. Conroy, president and chief executive of Third Wave. "Third
Wave looks forward to bringing our CE-marked HPV test to market in
January 2008.”
Cervical cancer strikes nearly half a million women each year worldwide,
claiming a quarter of a million lives, according to the National Cancer
Institute.
