William Blair & Company initiated research coverage of Sonic Solutions
(Nasdaq:SNIC) ($9.70), whose technology allows for the creation and
manipulation of digital media content, with a Market Perform rating and
company profile of Aggressive Growth.
Analyst Ralph Schackart estimated that the company would generate pro
forma earnings per share of $0.32 in fiscal 2008 and $0.55 in fiscal
2009.
"Sonic is a pure play on the proliferation of
digital media creation and consumption trends,”
Schackart said. "The company has assembled a
nice portfolio of digital media software tools and products, and it is
well positioned to capitalize on the growing number of consumers who
want to make and manipulate DVDs, CDs, and digital photos/videos, among
other digital media content.” "Sonic appears to be on the verge of
capitalizing on a number of potentially large growth opportunities that
would create a highly profitable, per-unit, royalty-based business model
similar to Dolby, DTS, and Monotype Imaging (three other per-unit
licensing business models on our coverage list),”
he added. "Specific opportunities include
download-and-burn, media management on cellular devices, middleware
licensing for next-generation DVD playback, and next-generation DVD
interactivity.”
