EMMITSBURG, Md., Sept. 9, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Mount St. Mary's University Division of Continuing Studies (DCS) recently developed a new Bachelor of Science in Computational Technology, as well as a Computational Technology Baccalaureate Certificate. Courses are entirely online, offering working adults a flexible option to further their education in a high-demand field. Students can begin enrolling in the program in January 2026.

"This program positions the Mount as a forward-thinking institution that adapts to both workforce needs and student realities," shared Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science Melanie Butler, Ph.D., mastermind behind the development of the DCS computational technology curriculum. "We developed the accelerated undergraduate degree and certificate program in response to the growing demand for flexible, career-aligned STEM pathways that blend technical skill development with realworld problem-solving."

Computational technology is an interdisciplinary major, synthesizing curriculum from data and computer science, business, and mathematics to prepare students for real-world, tech-based careers. Computational technology graduates go on to build a variety of careers, in fields like cybersecurity, IT, artificial intelligence, research, and software development.

The Mount's new program and certificate were designed with working adults and nontraditional undergraduates in mind. Courses are offered in five and eight-week sessions, both asynchronous and synchronous online, and provide a convenient and affordable pathway to a new career without sacrificing academic experience. The certificate is also available to traditional undergraduate students studying on the Mount's Emmitsburg campus.

"By offering an innovative, accelerated STEM option online, we can reach a broader student population, including adult learners and career changers, while equipping them with the kinds of skills employers are actively seeking: data literacy, analytical thinking, computational proficiency, and adaptability," Butler said. "It's a win-win that enhances our academic portfolio and strengthens our commitment to providing accessible, future-focused education."
