UTGIS Offers Free Visual Water Leak Survey Guide for Public Works, Municipal Utilities

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla., June 26, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Over the next 12 months, Florida based Utility Testing and Geographic Information Systems (UTGIS) will be introducing new technologies and methodologies to help municipalities and utilities identify leaks in their water distribution systems. The Visual Water Leak Survey Guide is the first of these tools to be introduced by UTGIS and is free for the asking.

Recent projections from the US Drought Monitor website and national news organizations regarding the Colorado River Basin water levels show that many parts of the US are in various stages of drought. Areas in the US Southwest are presently at D3 or D4 Levels- with D4 being the most severe rating possible. Lake Mead and Lake Powell are still far below normal levels, affecting millions of people now and for years into the future. Specific national and local drought condition data can be found on the NOAA National Integrated Drought Information System at NIDIS.

According to an EPA datasheet, the average loss of non-revenue water in a distribution system is 16%, of which 75% is recoverable. This represents billions of gallons of water lost on an annual basis.

"We cannot control the replenishing rains or winter snowpacks, but we can look at new ways to identify municipal water system leaks," said UTGIS President Mark Voigtsberger "The Visual Water Leak Survey is a free tool to supplement every water loss detection program."

The Survey is as simple as the name states: looking for water leaks which have percolated to the surface of the road or earth and then documenting those locations for further investigation using traditional leak detection methods. Said Voigtsberger, "It is surprising how many water main leaks will manifest at grade level. The problem is, we have never trained ourselves to look for these indicators."

"The Visual Water Leak Survey can be performed using existing departmental cars and trucks without modification, but UTGIS typically uses electric bikes and scooters as these allow greater investigation into areas where there are no roads such as public parks," according to Voigtsberger. "The Survey can also help provide a meaningful work solution for workers who may be on a light duty status."

UTGIS makes the Visual Water Leak Survey Guide available to any water department at no cost simply by asking. Voigtsberger emphasized that the Visual Water Leak Survey is not intended to be the only method to identify non-revenue water losses, but another tool to conserve water.

UTGIS is a Florida based SBA certified Veteran Owned Small Business (VOSB) providing data collection and leak survey services to the water, gas and electric utility sectors. Training and consulting on the Visual Water Leask Survey method is also available.
