Geldmarktfonds

Ein Geldmarktfonds ist ein Investmentfonds der hauptsächlich in Geldmarkttitel investiert. Diese Titel werden auch Geldmarktpapier, Liquiditätstitel oder Schatzwechsel genannt und prominente Vertreter dieser Kategorie sind zum Beispiel Staatsanleihen oder Einlagezertifikate (Certificates of Deposit) von Banken. Durch diese Strategie versucht das Fondsmanagement für die Anleger eines Geldmarktfonds eine höhere Rendite zu erwirtschaften als es bei einer Anlage auf einem Tagesgeldkonto möglich wäre. Außerdem ermöglicht ein Geldmarktfonds auch kleineren privaten Anlegern einen indirekten Zugang zum Geldmarkt, welcher ansonsten Staaten, großen Banken, Versicherungsgesellschaften und anderen institutionellen Anlegern vorbehalten ist. Ein Geldmarktfonds soll gleichzeitig ein möglichst geringes Risiko aufweisen, indem eine Diversifizierung des Risikos durch die Investition in Papiere unterschiedlicher Emittenten vorgenommen wird und nur in Titel mit einer Laufzeit von unter 12 Monaten investiert wird. Es verbleibt lediglich ein Zinsänderungsrisiko und das allgemeine Kreditrisiko des Geldmarktfonds-Emittenten. Des Weiteren gibt es einige Kostenpunkte die bei einem normalen Konto nicht entstehen würden: Der Anleger muss analog zu einer regulären Fondsbeteiligung unter Umständen einen Ausgabeaufschlag, Verwaltungskosten und Depotgebühren aufwenden.

Institutionelle Anleger nutzen ein Geldmarktkonto hauptsächlich um ihr Geld kurzfristig und mit besseren Konditionen als bei einer Bank anzulegen, denn der Geldmarktfonds kann börsentäglich zurückgegeben werden.

Im Zuge der Wirtschafts- und Finanzkrise 2008 sind viele Geldmarktfonds trotz des geringen Risikos mit einer negativen Rendite aufgelöst worden, da sie größtenteils im Unwissen ihrer Anleger ein marodes Fondsportfolio aufgestellt haben. Seitdem ist das in Geldmarktfonds investierte Vermögen stark zurückgegangen: Während 2007 in Deutschland über 100 Milliarden Euro in Geldmarktfonds investiert waren, Betrug die Summe im Jahr 2015 nur noch 12,2 Milliarden Euro.

Zu beachten ist, dass die Geldmarktfonds zu dem Sondervermögen des Emittenten zählen, daher können Gläubiger im Insolvenzfall nicht auf seine Rücklagen zugreifen und das angelegte Kapital ist nicht durch die Einlagensicherung der Bank geschützt.
