Financial Anxiety Surges as Americans Confront 2025 Economy, AMFM Healthcare Survey Finds
79% of those surveyed say money worries have worsened this year, sparking lost sleep, strained relationships, and postponed mental-health care
ORANGE COUNTY, Calif., July 24, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- A new national survey commissioned by AMFM Healthcare reveals that a majority of Americans are grappling with mounting financial anxiety as economic pressures intensify in 2025. The poll found that 87 percent of respondents feel anxious about their finances, and nearly 79 percent report that this anxiety has increased since the start of the year.
The study shows that money worries are no longer an occasional concern; 70 percent of participants experience financial anxiety more than once a week. That stress is seeping into everyday life, with 77 percent saying economic pressure has disrupted their sleep, 67 percent noting strain on personal relationships, and almost 60 percent acknowledging a decline in work performance. Housing costs, debt, healthcare expenses, and retirement planning each contribute to mental-health strain for roughly three-quarters of those surveyed. Alarmingly, 60 percent admit they have postponed seeking mental-health treatment because of cost concerns.
"Behind every inflation statistic is a real person lying awake at night," said Ted Guastello, CEO, AMFM Healthcare. "When almost eight in ten Americans tell us their financial anxiety has grown this year, it becomes clear that economic stress is a public-health issue as much as a pocketbook issue."
The ripple effects are profound. Respondents linked financial stress to restless nights, arguments at home, and diminished concentration at work. This is an emotional toll that compounds the nation's economic challenges.
"Financial distress rarely travels alone," said Ashley Pena, VP of Outpatient Operations of Mission Connection at AMFM Healthcare. "It drags fatigue, isolation, and hopelessness in its wake. Too many people avoid getting help because they fear the cost, yet timely support can prevent small worries from becoming full-blown mental health crises."
AMFM Healthcare clinicians recommend several evidence-based practices that anyone can adopt. Writing down money-related fears helps separate actionable facts from catastrophic thoughts. Setting a limited, scheduled time to check financial news prevents endless doom-scrolling. Pairing a realistic budget with self-care line items, such as exercise, brief mindfulness breaks, or therapy co-pays, acknowledges mental health as a necessity rather than a luxury. Community clinics, tele-therapy platforms, employer assistance programs, and nonprofit hotlines can make professional support affordable. Simple techniques like one-minute breathing exercises, short walks, or naming nearby sights and sounds can interrupt anxiety spirals, while staying connected with friends, family, or peer groups builds emotional resilience.
