Heinemann Releases New Edition of Math Expressions
Updated K-6 Math Curriculum Features Increased Digital Support and Adaptive Technology Alongside New Assessment Opportunities
PORTSMOUTH, N.H., June 26, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Heinemann today announced the release of an updated edition of its student-powered math curriculum Math Expressions. The new edition will offer the same research-proven, inquiry-based approach to math instruction, with a vibrant new look and increased focus on new digital tools and integrated assessment opportunities. Math Expressions will be available on the Heinemann Flight platform for the 2025-2026 school year.
Backed by a decade of research funded by the National Science Foundation on how to effectively teach students math from an early age, Math Expressions was developed by Dr. Karen Fuson, Professor Emerita of Learning Sciences and the School of Education and Social Policy, as well as the Department of Psychology at Northwestern University. Dr. Fuson's research is highly regarded in the field of elementary mathematics and explores how students build on and use conceptual supports for a balanced inquiry path to mastery.
"I am very excited about the new edition of Math Expressions," said Dr. Karen Fuson. "It has the same strong mathematical content, research-based conceptual learning paths for students and focus on fluency as in earlier editions. But now there is more support for teachers to build their nurturing math talk community as each Big Idea in each unit begins with a question that students pursue as well as raising their own questions."
Enhanced Digital Tools to Support Both Teachers and Students
The updated Math Expressions will offer a thoughtful digital experience for both teachers and students on the Heinemann Flight platform that blends seamlessly with the program's print components. Educators will have access to streamlined lesson planning tools, digital math manipulatives, administrative pages with reporting dashboards and standards alignment reports. The embedded game-based app Matific provides interactive math practice, with NWEA MAP Growth-aligned activities and personalized learning paths based on student progress that make instruction effective and engaging.
Effective Assessment to Power Differentiated, Responsive Instruction
The new edition of Math Expressions features formative and summative assessments that mirror state standards and other high-stakes assessments, helping students to be prepared for testing success. Digital assessments and real-time reporting tools will also allow teachers to quickly pinpoint learning gaps and adjust instruction to meet individual needs.
"Math Expressions is unique in its interactive, student-centered approach, helping students enhance their numerical reasoning skills and continually function as conceptual thinkers," said Maggie DeMont, general manager of Heinemann. "And it's proven to be highly effective, with schools seeing an average 12-15% gain on state tests. Heinemann is delighted to be able to offer a new edition of this transformative math curriculum to teachers and students nationwide."
