Infrasense Completes Airport Pavement Structure Evaluation using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)
SAN FRANCISCO, June 18, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Infrasense recently conducted an extensive Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) pavement structure evaluation within select areas of a major airport in California. This multi-frequency GPR survey was conducted to identify thicknesses and other underlying conditions in the upper and lower Asphalt Concrete (AC), Portland Cement Concrete (PCC), and Cement-Treated Base (CTB) layers.
Data was collected using a combination of a 1-GHz air-launched antenna, dual 400-MHz ground-coupled antennas, and dual 900-MHz ground-coupled antennas along pre-determined alignments. This combination was particularly helpful in handling expected variations in asphalt thickness. Each antenna system was mounted to a survey vehicle, while integrated synchronous GPS data was recorded along each of the traverses for positional accuracy and reporting.
The GPR analysis consisted of mapping locations that showed potential CTB degradation using the individual pavement layer data collected with the 900-MHz antennas. Layer thicknesses and amplitudes at layer interfaces were both reported, and results were used to identify evidence of moisture and potential degradation at the PCC/CTB interface. Layer tracking from both the 1-GHz and 400-MHz data was utilized during pavement thickness analysis. While the 1-GHz data provided high resolution for tracking shallow layers (ACC and PCC), the 400-MHz data was able to detect deeper layers (CTB and base). Identified targets were delineated and exported as Latitude and Longitude for use in mapping software such as Google Earth or GIS. The results of this evaluation were presented in tabular format with corresponding latitude, longitude, and linear distance values.
