June is National Cancer Survivor Month: CanCare Urges Communities to Support the Emotional Journey of Newly Diagnosed Patients
HOUSTON , June 16, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Every June, National Cancer Survivor Month honors the strength and resilience of more than 18 million survivors across the United States. But beyond survival, critical questions remain: Who supports patients after diagnosis, through treatment, and in the months and years that follow?
We believe in the healing power of connection, and we know that at diagnosis, people need more than a prognosis. For 35 years, CanCare, a Houston-based nonprofit, has answered that call by providing personalized emotional and spiritual support to those affected by cancer. With a nationwide network of trained volunteers, many of whom are survivors or caregivers themselves, CanCare ensures that no one faces cancer alone.
"People need more than a prognosis. They need someone to walk beside them," says Darcie Wells, President and CEO of CanCare and a caregiver herself. "Authentic connection is at the heart of healing."
In 2024 alone, CanCare served over 11,500 patients and caregivers, conducted more than 9,600 visits through hospital partnerships, and welcomed 81 new volunteers. Today, its reach spans 43 states and five countries, with support offered in over 30 languages.
At the core of CanCare's work is a one-on-one matching program that pairs clients with volunteers who share similar cancer types, caregiving roles, or life experiences. The organization also offers professionally facilitated virtual support groups and in-person visitation at over 20 healthcare facilities nationwide.
"Programs like CanCare offer a kind of healing no prescription can," says Dr. Candy Arentz, a breast surgical oncologist and volunteer. "The emotional toll of cancer is real, and support from someone who understands it firsthand is invaluable."
In honor of its 35th anniversary, CanCare aims to encourage and support 35,000 newly diagnosed patients through the sale and distribution of its Amazon #1 bestseller, Hope in the Face of Cancer. This collection of 55 stories from survivors, caregivers, and healthcare professionals reflects the compassion and strength of the cancer community. Proceeds help fund volunteer training and expand CanCare's reach.
You can support CanCare by becoming a trained volunteer, donating to sustain matches and hospital visits, or purchasing and sharing Hope in the Face of Cancer with hospitals, patients, and your network. Corporations and healthcare providers are also invited to partner during Cancer Survivor Month.
