Cross-border deal, the largest-ever carbon removal deal involving biochar, marks a major milestone in the carbon removal market, turning sustainable forestry residues into climate action

MIAMI, June 25, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- In a milestone transaction set to advance global carbon removal efforts, Lawson Huck Gonzalez, PLLC (Lawson) partner Harold "Ed" Patricoff, Jr. served as legal counsel for Exomad Green SRL in a landmark carbon credit agreement between the Bolivian company and Microsoft. The long-term contract involves the verified removal of 1.24 million tons of carbon dioxide over the next decade and is recognized as the largest-ever carbon removal deal involving biochar to date.

At the center of this pioneering agreement is biochar, a carbon-rich product made from Exomad Green's conversion of sustainable forestry residues from Bolivian forests. This process not only mitigates deforestation linked to soil degradation and reduces biomass waste, but also produces durable, certified carbon removals with measurable environmental impact.

The transaction was led by Patricoff, an authority in climate and energy transition law, during his transition from Duane Morris LLP to Lawson, where he now serves as shareholder in the firm's newly launched Miami office and as a member of its management committee. His move marks a significant step in the firm's expansion into cross-border and climate-related transactions. Lawson now has offices in Miami, Tallahassee, Tampa, Orlando, and Jacksonville.

"This agreement reflects a new era of climate accountability," said Patricoff. "Exomad Green has demonstrated how scalable innovation can deliver credible, science-backed carbon removal. And Microsoft's decision to contract for these removals sets an important precedent for corporate climate strategies grounded in integrity and impact."

With support from Duane Morris colleague Robert Montejo, Patricoff provided key legal guidance on the transaction, helping navigate international certifications and complex environmental protocols. The agreement positions both Exomad Green and Microsoft at the forefront of climate leadership, showing how carbon removal can become a practical solution for decarbonization goals.

This milestone raises the bar for carbon credit procurement, establishing biochar as a critical, scalable solution in the fight against climate change and a viable path toward corporate net-zero commitments.
