Texas Association of Community Health Plans and Feeding Texas Collaborate to Support HHSC's Second Annual "Healthy Texan Week"
AUSTIN, Texas, May 5, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The Texas Association of Community Health Plans (TACHP) is partnering with Feeding Texas to participate in the Texas Health and Human Services Commission's Second Annual Healthy Texan Week. From May 5-11, Healthy Texan Week will feature a series of events across the state to promote better nutrition, active living, and greater awareness of healthcare resources.
"TACHP is so excited to be a part of Healthy Texan Week," said Janet Walker, President and CEO of the Texas Association of Community Health Plans. "Our organization represents community health plans across the state who provide personalized care to individuals and families every day. Our member organizations are embedded in the communities in which they serve. That's why it's such a natural fit for TACHP to support Healthy Texan Week. We care about the communities we serve, and we want to continue to provide individuals the tools they need to live healthy lives."
TACHP and Feeding Texas work year-round to improve the health and well-being of Texans. Food banks in the Feeding Texas network provide over 5,000 nutrition education classes annually in schools, public housing facilities, food pantries, and feeding sites to reach thousands of Texans. And TACHP member community plans serve more than 2 million Medicaid members throughout the state. Through these programs and efforts, Texans have increased access to health and well-being services, including education about stretching their SNAP dollars and cooking nutritious meals at home.
"Nutrition and health are deeply connected," said Celia Cole, CEO of Feeding Texas, the state association of food banks. "Individuals facing food insecurity are more likely to experience adverse health effects and face barriers to accessing necessary health services. That's why the Feeding Texas network is proud to partner with the Texas Association of Community Health Plans for Healthy Texan Week. Texas food banks are committed to ensuring that all Texans have access to the nutritious food they need to thrive and live healthy lives."
A series of health and wellness events will be held across the state this week, including in Abilene, Austin, El Paso, Fort Worth, the Rio Grande Valley, and San Antonio. There will also be a virtual kickoff event on May 5 that will allow statewide participation online. These events will include cooking demonstrations, fitness tips, and guidance on building holistic wellness habits.
