GUANGZHOU, China, May 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- As "Ne Zha 2", a Chinese animated blockbuster based on Chinese mythological characters, continues to captivate audiences worldwide, a parallel surge of interest in traditional Chinese culture resonated through the halls of the 137th China Import and Export Fair (Canton Fair). More than a global trade event, the Canton Fair has become a dynamic platform where traditional heritage meets contemporary design, reflecting the growing role of cultural expression in international commerce. Chinese cultural motifs are no longer confined to museums and history books, they are being reimagined as marketable, emotionally resonant products with global appeal.

Tradition Reimagined

Across the sprawling exhibition halls, Chinese heritage was finding new life through modern craftsmanship and innovative product design. Exhibitors reinterpreted traditional cultural elements with fresh creativity: handbags featured scenes from Along the River During the Qingming Festival, the iconic Song dynasty scroll painting by Zhang Zeduan; porcelain items echoed the graceful lotus motifs of the Tang dynasty; and silk scarves took inspiration from ancient murals of the Pilu Temple, one of China's revered Buddhist landmarks. Even Old Dragon's Head in Shanhaiguan, recognized as the easternmost point of the Great Wall, was transformed into intricately designed earrings, demonstrating how history can be turned into wearable, collectible art.

This cultural infusion is more than aesthetic. These designs imbue products with emotional and symbolic meaning, setting them apart in saturated global markets. It's an evolution driven by the rise of Guochao, or "China Chic", a movement celebrating domestic culture and aesthetics, now gaining traction internationally.

China Chic Goes Global

On April 25, the Canton Fair hosted the forum "The Rising Wave of China Chic Going Global," where experts and industry leaders explored how Chinese cultural intellectual property (IP) can gain international influence. Using Ne Zha 2 as a case study, the forum delved into the evolving economics of cultural IP, highlighting the importance of cross-industry collaboration in content creation and branding.

Topics included the power of technology in amplifying visual symbolism, identifying universal values embedded in traditional narratives, and building global creative networks that integrate everything from production to distribution. Corporate representatives showcased case studies featuring AI-assisted design tools and flexible supply chains that align with local market preferences. Panelists emphasized the need for deeper integration of digital tools and cultural narratives to create globally resonant products that reflect China's unique identity in a multicultural world.

Living Heritage

The Canton Fair's Phase Two further celebrated Chinese heritage through the "Time-Honored Guangdong Brands" pavilion, where over 20 time-honored brands from cities like Guangzhou, Shantou, and Yangjiang presented their most iconic offerings. Visitors sampled cured meats, aged soy sauces, Chaozhou-style beef balls, and fragrant tangerine peel drinks—each product steeped in local tradition and storytelling. The experience was enhanced by live lion dances and reenactments from the ancient Nanyue Kingdom, bringing history to life through an engaging, multisensory showcase.

Elsewhere, the Fair exhibitions spotlighted intangible cultural heritage, with demonstrations of intricate Zhaoqing embroidery and centuries-old clock-making skills from Lee Jim Kee. These crafts not only showcased the richness of Chinese tradition but also underscored their relevance in contemporary markets through thoughtful packaging and design innovation.

More than just a trading venue, the Canton Fair is evolving into a cultural crossroads where commerce meets heritage. As Chinese traditions are reinterpreted for global audiences, storytelling, design, and identity are becoming key assets in cross-border trade. With growing international demand for products that carry both aesthetic and emotional value, culturally inspired goods are playing a powerful role in reshaping China's image on the world stage.
