CINCINNATI, June 25, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The Kroger Co. Meet Yme Van Beek from Smith’s Food and Drug in St. George, Utah. Yme joined the Kroger Family of Companies 20 years ago starting at QFC in Seattle, Washington and has given nearly 40 years to the art of meat cutting.

"We join our customers in honoring our nation's birthday with special gratitude for all who have served and sacrificed for the fundamental promise of American freedom and democracy," said Ron Sargent, Kroger's Chairman and CEO. Meet Yme Van Beek from Smith's Food and Drug in St. George, Utah. Yme joined the Kroger Family of Companies 20 years ago starting at QFC in Seattle, Washington and has given nearly 40 years to the art of meat cutting.

Asked about the love and pride he has for his work, Yme shares, "Still to this day after many years, I enjoy the craft of cutting meat. I enjoy providing our customers with the freshest quality cuts that they deserve. I know my craftsmanship and the skills I have developed over the years allows our customers to enjoy their time spent around the table with family and friends. I am proud of the Kroger Company I work for; they have treated me very well."

For anyone interested in pursuing his craft, he suggests having patience and a willingness to learn from others.

This Independence Day, Yme recommends brats, carne asada, baby back ribs or a crowd favorite cut of beef like New York Strip for chefs firing up the grill, and brisket, pork shoulder or a whole chicken for smoking. His personal favorites for summer grilling are boneless ribeye and salmon.

Yme's tips for Independence Day celebrations:

  • For optimal barbecuing results, start with a clean grill and brush grates with vegetable oil to help prevent foods from sticking.
  • When grilling burgers, place an ice cube in the center of the meat patty to help the meat retain moisture.
  • Grilling watermelon or pineapple adds delicious variety to a meal.
  • Ask the associate behind the meat counter what items have the best flavor and tenderness and inquire about their personal favorite cuts. For customers looking for custom cuts, just ask.
