Lake community hosts launch event for state's largest nanobubble technology treatment
to combat toxic algae

PINE CITY, Minn., July 17, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- As harmful algal blooms continue to threaten Minnesota's lakes each summer, one community is taking action. The Pokegama Lake Association (PLA), together with local community members and Moleaer, are deploying the state's largest nanobubble technology treatment to date, a chemical-free solution to restore lake health without harsh treatments.

"In the past, our only option was alum treatment. But with over 60% of the phosphorus in Pokegama Lake coming from external loading, alum isn't a long-term solution," said Kathy Nielsen of the Pokegama Lake Association. "We need real solutions, not a band-aid."

The launch event on July 24 in Pine City is an opportunity to see this innovative technology up close during peak bloom season, hear directly from community leaders, and learn how nanobubbles, a clean and sustainable technology, are reshaping the future of lake restoration.

Why It Matters

  • New hope for Minnesota's impaired lakes: the project represents a scalable, science-backed model for other Minnesota lakes battling toxic blooms.

  • Urgent public health risk: harmful Algae Blooms (HABs), often caused by cyanobacteria, can release toxins linked to rashes, respiratory illness, and gastrointestinal illness. HAB's can also be fatal to animals, like dogs.

  • Economic impact: algal outbreaks can affect tourism, recreation, and property values across the state.

  • Proven solution: Moleaer Nanobubble technology has reduced the severity of algae in Tadd Lake, MN, Lake Arrowhead in WI, and Lake Elsinore in California.

  • High-volume, high-data project: supported by 2,000+ water quality points, this effort includes water and sediment testing, and biological monitoring to track impact.

About Pokegama Lake

This 1,521-acre recreational hub for swimming, boating, and fishing, Pokegama Lake has long struggled with excess nutrients, poor water quality, and recurring algal blooms. Community members and the PLA rallied around this new effort, combining grassroots support with match funding to treat one of the lake's most impacted bays.

The chemical-free solution uses nanobubbles to naturally restore lake health by accelerating natural recovery processes to improve water quality and reduce algae. The event offers media access to the technology, project leaders and community members during one of the most vulnerable seasons for Minnesota lakes.

Media Opportunities

  • Remarks from and interviews available with PLA, Blue Water Science, County Commissioner and Chair of Snake River Watershed, Moleaer, residents

  • Boat tours to view treatment area and nanobubble system in operation

  • Filming and photo access to technology, container, and lakefront activity

RSVP's are encouraged due to space for boat tours.
