From Manhattan to Provence: Paul Mathieu Returns to Château La Coste with 'Pure'
NEW YORK, June 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Six years after Still Motion—a landmark solo exhibition celebrating his decades-long career, held within the Renzo Piano Art Pavilion—internationally acclaimed designer Paul Mathieu returns this summer to Château La Coste, the global art destination and vineyard in Provence, France.
Pure, a stand-alone show of Plasterglass works created at Ralph Pucci's New York studio by leading artists and designers, runs from June 23 – September 21 and will feature eight pieces from Mathieu's award-winning collections, installed within the Oscar Niemeyer-designed exhibition space.
Selections from the Grace, Dee, Libre (winner of Interior Design Magazine's Best of Year 2023) and Ella (winner of the NYCxDesign Awards, Best of 2019) collections—all sculpted using Ralph Pucci's proprietary blend of plaster glass and fiberglass-resin—are finished with a matte texture, preserving the unique impression of the artist's hand. Mathieu's approach, born of technical mastery and boundless creativity, combines the poetry of natural elements to create fluid, sculptural forms that evoke a dialogue between space and form, stillness and motion.
Bridging past and present, Mathieu's return to Château La Coste affirms his enduring role in linking the design communities of Manhattan and Aix-en-Provence, where he maintains residences. Coveted by galleries and collectors around the world, his vision has influenced international design since 1987, when an early partnership with Michael Ray garnered global attention. Lauded by design legend Andrée Putman who chose Mathieu and Ray to be the first living designers creating collections for Ecart International, his work has been described by Le Monde as "…favorable to poetic meditation."
This return to Château La Coste—just 30 minutes from the 17th-century Madeleine Church that houses his liturgical designs—reaffirms the subtle yet enduring influence of Mathieu's creative vision on both the local and global cultural landscape.
