Hong Kong's Innovation and Technology Leading the Future: A Global Perspective from the Hong Kong ICT Awards
HONG KONG, June 10, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Riding on the wave of innovation and technology (I&T), Hong Kong is swiftly advancing towards its goal of becoming an international I&T hub. In this context, the Hong Kong ICT (HKICT) Awards has emerged as a crucial platform for fostering local I&T development. By recognising outstanding local I&T products, solutions and applications, the Awards not only encourages local talents and enterprises to pursue innovation and excellence as well as develop more creative products, but also serves as a bridge connecting local industry to international markets, enabling Hong Kong's I&T enterprises to write glorious success stories on the global stage. This year marks the 19th edition of the HKICT Awards. It is not only the annual signature event of the local ICT industry, but also the longest-standing and most prestigious flagship ICT award in Hong Kong.
Commending Innovation and Excellence: Diverse Awards Categories Highlighting Technology Power
The Digital Policy Office (DPO) has recently introduced the latest information about the 2025 HKICT Awards at a media gathering and invited several past winners to share their I&T journeys, as well as how participating in the competition helped them carve out a niche in the I&T field.
The HKICT Awards has eight award categories, covering Digital Entertainment, Fintech, Smart Business, Smart Living, Smart Mobility, Smart People, Student Innovation, and ICT Startup, fully demonstrating the profound impact of technology on life and business. The Grand Award winner of each category will also have the opportunity to compete for the highest honour, the "Award of the Year". In a bid to foster the innovative use of artificial intelligence (AI), a "Best Use of AI" award winner will be selected in each of the eight categories to showcase and honour outstanding achievements in harnessing the power of AI in respective areas.
Ir Tony WONG, the Commissioner for Digital Policy, said that the HKICT Awards is not only a recognition of the strength of local I&T, but also a starting point to the international arena. Winners have the opportunity to participate in various international competitions such as the "Asia Pacific ICT Alliance Awards" (APICTA Awards) and the "Mobile World Congress", helping their products expand into the Mainland and international markets.
Keep Cities Moving: A Successful Case of Industry-Academia Collaboration
MTR Corporation, in collaboration with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), won the highest honour "Award of the Year" at the 2024 HKICT Awards with "Public transport ridership simulation and railway planning – MTR to Keep Cities Moving". It was also the winner of the Smart Mobility Grand Award. The project went beyond Hong Kong last year, becoming the winner of "Business Data Analytics Category" at the 2024 APICTA Awards. The award-winning system integrates MTR's travel data and HKUST's big data analysis model to predict passenger flow for the MTR network, helping the operations team plan operations and management measures in advance, improving transport efficiency, and facilitating public travel. The award highlights MTR's excellence in technology and service creation, not only encouraging the company to continue leveraging technology to provide better services and greater convenience for public travelling, but also inspiring and motivating other enterprises to engage in business innovation and digital transformation through close collaboration among industry, academia and research, thus consolidating Hong Kong's leading position in international smart city.
Two Decades of Unremitting Research: Opening a New World for the Hearing Impaired
Since winning the HKICT Awards for the first time in 2012, Logital Company Limited has continuously strived for research and development, winning the Awards again in 2024 with its fourth-generation product. This product integrates groundbreaking noise reduction and echo cancellation technology. It is not only invisible and easy to wear, but also allows countless hearing-impaired individuals to regain clear hearing. Founder, Mr Danny CHEUNG, said that since the first award, the product had been nominated by the Awards to participate in various local and overseas large-scale I&T exhibitions and competitions, enabling this locally developed breakthrough technology to be promoted internationally and making the Hong Kong-made brand widely recognised. Driven by the Awards, the team has focused on user needs throughout these 20 years, committed to technological innovation, continuously breaking through and improving product quality, keeping its technology globally leading, and benefiting the hearing impaired.
Breaking Through Indoor Navigation Technology Bottlenecks: Barrier-Free Travel
Maphive Technology Limited is an outstanding representative in the field of smart mobility. It won the 2020 Smart Mobility Grand Award and the Gold Award again at the 2024 HKICT Awards with different products. The company's indoor positioning and navigation technology has been applied in over a hundred locations in Hong Kong, not only helping fire rescue, but also providing barrier-free navigation services for wheelchair users, visually impaired individuals, and baby stroller users. Through the Awards' recognition, they have been well received in the international markets, such as collaborating with Apple Inc., Haneda Airport, and the Singapore government in the field of indoor maps. Recently, Maphive Technology participated in an international exhibition nominated by the Awards, thus connecting with clients from Saudi Arabia. Currently, they are planning to penetrate the Middle East market with a view to further expanding its international footprint.
From Student Innovation to Industry Leadership: Innovation and Technology Awards Nurturing the Next Generation of Talents
On the other hand, the HKICT Awards provides a stage for students to showcase their I&T talents and effectively inspire the innovation potential of the younger generation. Mr Jordan FUNG, founder of Lizard Digital Solutions, with unique creativity and strength, has devoted himself in I&T since his student days. He won a silver award in the "2016 Hong Kong ICT Awards: Best Student Invention (Junior Secondary)" category. This award enabled him to recognise many local industry players and participate in various international competitions, leading him to the global I&T stage and providing opportunity to continue his studies at renowned overseas I&T institutions. After graduation, Jordan continued to develop in the I&T industry, ultimately being selected for the 2023/24 Cyberport Creative Micro Fund, thus successfully establishing a company and striving to integrate AI education into youth learning. He said that the Awards has had a profound impact on his development in I&T over the past decade, and he hopes that more students will join the I&T industry in the future, using technology to make society better.
Passionate About Innovation and Technology Since Childhood: Striving for Excellence
Miss Clarisse POON from St. Paul's Co-educational College won the 2024 Student Innovation Award with the "Medisafe" system. The system uses AI technology to compare and analyse drug prescriptions, providing support for medical professionals. Clarisse has been passionate about I&T since childhood, participating in I&T competitions since primary five. She believes that technology is a tool for societal progress. Through the rigorous competition process, she received feedback from judges and other I&T experts in different fields, continuously optimised and improved the system. She hopes to apply this technology to wider range of medical scenarios in the future. Clarisse plans to further develop other systems, continuing to move forward on her I&T journey.
