Inlyte's Iron-Sodium Battery Proves Efficiency Milestone Ahead of First Utility Demonstration
Safe and Domestically Produced: Next-generation battery delivers efficient cycling and seamless multi-day backup without lithium
SAN LEANDRO, Calif., May 7, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Inlyte Energy today announced a major performance milestone for its innovative iron-sodium battery technology, achieving over 80% round-trip efficiency in third-party cycle testing of its battery, including auxiliaries – a significant breakthrough for long-duration energy storage. Southern Company research and development is expected to deploy the first integrated system in Q4 2025, marking a critical step toward broader commercial adoption.
The results were independently validated by HORIBA MIRA, a global leader in engineering and testing. The milestone positions Inlyte's battery as a highly efficient, domestically sourced alternative to lithium-ion systems for stationary energy storage.
Tests conducted at HORIBA MIRA's UK facilities evaluated performance under realistic cycling and abuse scenarios. Results confirmed the battery's exceptional performance, safety, durability, and simplicity. These results build upon Inlyte's iron-sodium cell-level performance findings, which demonstrated stable performance of 90% efficiency and no capacity loss after more than 700 cycles. The new battery-level results demonstrate realized performance from the integration of 100 iron-sodium cells and associated auxiliary control systems.
"Real energy solutions need to be rigorously tested at scale. HORIBA MIRA's third-party testing of our iron-sodium battery demonstrates readiness for the next frontier – field deployment," said Antonio Baclig, CEO of Inlyte Energy. "We have a next-generation energy storage solution that we can manufacture domestically, with domestically sourced materials. This enables true energy independence, which has never been more important."
In support of scaling U.S. manufacturing, Inlyte recently announced a strategic partnership with HORIEN Salt Battery Solutions, the world's largest producer of sodium metal chloride batteries with a 25-year commercial track record in premium UPS applications. This collaboration accelerates domestic production, with commercial deliveries targeted for 2026.
Inlyte Energy is now preparing for its first utility demo with Southern Company, one of the nation's leading energy providers. Southern Company's team will operate Inlyte's iron-sodium battery near Birmingham, Ala. Evaluation will last for at least one year and will serve as a critical stage of product validation. Results will be shared across a broad utility network, in collaboration with EPRI, an independent, non-profit energy R&D organization.
"We are thrilled for Southern Company's collaboration to accelerate Inlyte's path to market," said Ben Kaun, Inlyte's Chief Commercial Officer. "Utilities have the highest standards for safety and durability, and we are looking forward to proving the capability of iron-sodium battery storage to this critical customer audience."
The iron-sodium battery's modular design makes it ideal for utilities, industrial facilities, data centers, and critical infrastructure seeking reliable, domestically produced, and resilient power storage solutions.
