1950-1980: A Beacon for Black Entertainment

Opened in 1950, the Carver Theatre was designed by Dallas-based architect Jack Corgan and named after scientist George Washington Carver. The opulent building originally cost $300,000 with seating for 1050 patrons. The Carver was a cultural hub in Treme, hosting films, concerts, plays and community events.

1980-2005: Transition to Healthcare

In 1980, the Carver closed and by 1984 was repurposed into the Carver Medical Clinic housing general practitioners, a dentist, a pharmacist, and an ophthalmologist, becoming a crucial healthcare provider to the community.

2005: Hurricane Katrina

In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina submerged the Carver under six feet of floodwater.

2014: Restoration & Rebirth

After an $8 million renovation, the Carver Theatre reopened in 2014, as a versatile venue for live music, theater, and community events. The restoration preserved the theatre's historic façade and marquee while modernizing the interior to accommodate contemporary performances. Today, the theatre boasts state-of-the-art acoustics and lighting systems and hosts jazz, big band, blues, and other performances. The facility is 17,613+/- square feet on two floors with bar and concession areas, private balconies, a backstage "Green Room", and secure parking. The theatre is located in an Opportunity and Enterprise Zone. The structures may qualify for State, Federal Historic, and New Market tax credits due to its location.

The Historic Carver Theatre plus 15 additional properties offered at auction with a starting bid of $2,000,000.
