Well Done Foundation and Second Nature Partner to Advance Climate Action in Higher Education
New Collaboration Aims to Equip Colleges and Universities with Scalable Methane Reduction Solutions Through Orphan Well Plugging
OKMULGEE, Okla., July 29, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The Well Done Foundation (WDF), a leading nonprofit dedicated to mitigating climate change by plugging methane-leaking orphaned oil and gas wells, announces a new strategic partnership with Second Nature, a leading nonprofit accelerating climate action through higher education. Through this collaboration, the two organizations will introduce impactful, science-backed climate solutions to colleges and universities striving to meet ambitious climate goals.
The partnership designates WDF as a Supporting Partner of Second Nature, unlocking new opportunities to integrate orphan well plugging, a powerful methane reduction strategy, into higher education climate action plans.
"One thing that sets Well Done Foundation apart is the opportunity for campuses to visit an oil well and contribute to and learn about the plugging process," said Tim Carter, President of Second Nature. "This connects campuses with a proven solution that reduces greenhouse gas emissions and creates powerful learning and engagement opportunities for students and faculty alike. We hope our campuses will consider adopting a well!"
The Well Done Foundation, founded in 2019, identifies, measures, and permanently plugs orphaned oil and gas wells; an often-overlooked source of methane pollution. With an estimated 3.5 million orphaned wells in the U.S., the climate impact is significant. WDF's model blends carbon finance, local engagement, and education to deliver measurable outcomes.
"This partnership with Second Nature represents a major step forward in bringing orphan well plugging to the forefront of campus climate action," said Curtis Shuck, Chairman and Founder of the Well Done Foundation. "Higher education has always been a catalyst for innovation, and we're proud to support institutions that want to move beyond pledges to real, on-the-ground impact."
As part of the partnership, Second Nature will host a webinar featuring WDF experts to introduce orphan well plugging to campus audiences, promote opportunities to "Adopt a Well" through individual or group campus engagement and support education around carbon markets, including how to purchase high-integrity carbon credits and participate in the Carbon Neutral Commuter program.
Second Nature's Climate Leadership Network includes hundreds of colleges and universities whose presidents and chancellors have committed to carbon neutrality and climate resilience. The organization also serves as higher education's liaison to national coalitions such as We Are Still In and America's Pledge and manages the University Climate Change Coalition (UC3).
This partnership demonstrates how cross-sector collaboration can accelerate decarbonization and connect technical climate solutions with the next generation of environmental leaders.
