A Protest History of the United States reviews more than 400 years of how Americans have expressed their displeasure with government policies and is being released at a time when many Americans are taking to the streets – both literally and virtually – to disagree with the current societal and governmental state of affairs. A key lesson found over those centuries: Lasting change is often the result of sustained, collective efforts.

Since Gloria Browne-Marshall is a social-justice attorney who has been involved in movements for change throughout her career, A Protest History weaves history, interviews and personal experiences to tell the stories of activists both famous and forgotten.

Gloria Browne-Marshall is a member of the National Press Club and author of seven books. She is a professor of constitutional law and Africana studies at John Jay College. In the fall of 2022, she was a visiting professor at the Harvard Kennedy School. She has litigated cases at the Southern Poverty Law Center, Community Legal Services in Philadelphia, and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. This is her fourth event at the National Press Club.

The event will include a discussion with the author and a book signing. To submit a question in advance, please put PROTEST in the subject line and email to headliners@press.org. The deadline for submitting questions is 4 p.m. on the day of the event.

The National Press Club is located on the 13th Floor of the National Press Building at 529 14th St., NW, Washington, D.C.
