FLORIDA CITIES OF DORAL AND BOCA RATON ADD REDSPEED PHOTO ENFORCEMENT SYSTEM TO IMPROVE SCHOOL ZONE SAFETY
With Florida Ranking as Second-Worst State for Dangerous Driving Around Schools, More Municipalities Turn to RedSpeed to Improve Safety for Children
MIAMI and BOCA RATON, Fla., May 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- RedSpeed, a leading provider of traffic safety photo enforcement solutions, announced today that the cities of Doral and Boca Raton will implement its school zone speed enforcement program in the upcoming school year. With Florida ranking as the second-worst state for dangerous driving near schools – and with traffic crashes the leading cause of death among school-age children – both cities selected RedSpeed to help elevate public awareness and enhance safety in designated school zones.
Specifically, the program will cover 16 school zones in Doral and 7 zones in Boca Raton, becoming effective for the 2025-2026 school year. Equipment installation will begin during the summer.
"We are honored to add Doral and Boca Raton to the growing list of municipalities across Florida and Georgia that rely on our proven solutions to raise public awareness and improve safety for some of their most vulnerable residents – school-age children," said RedSpeed CEO Robert Liberman.
How it works:
RedSpeed's advanced camera systems will be installed in designated school zones to monitor and enforce posted speed limits. Municipalities will provide RedSpeed with the enforcement schedule for each school zone, including specific dates and times. Based on this information, the cameras will be programmed to activate 30 minutes before the beginning of the school day or 30 minutes before a breakfast program, whichever is earlier, and deactivate 30 minutes after the school day ends. Violations will be issued to drivers exceeding the posted speed limit more than 11 mph during enforcement periods.
RedSpeed is Florida's largest provider of traffic safety photo enforcement, with systems deployed across 30 municipalities from Homestead to Fort Walton Beach. Established in 2006, RedSpeed currently partners with over 150 municipalities across several states, including Florida, Georgia, Illinois, and Maryland.
"Our goal is simple: To condition motorists to obey posted speed limits in and around school zones," Liberman said. "And the state data confirm that it works: motorists – particularly those who had previously received a violation through our school zone safety camera program – do not re-offend."
Additional benefits include:
Beyond improving compliance, the program enables local law enforcement to reallocate officers to higher priority areas. The technology also provides consistent, cost-effective, and impartial enforcement. Since the program is self-funded through citation revenue, municipalities can implement these safety measures without impacting taxpayer budgets.
The adoption of such programs continues to rise as municipalities take proactive steps to reduce school zone speeding. Traffic crashes remain the leading cause of death for school-age children in the U.S. and the risk of fatality increases significantly with speed. For example, while five out of 10 pedestrians survive being struck at 30 mph, only one in 10 survives a 40 mph impact.
"The message to the public is clear: If you want to avoid a notice of violation and, more importantly, protect young lives, just slow down and follow the speed limit," Liberman added. "Slower speeds save lives. With modern enforcement tools, we're helping communities hold more drivers accountable and improve safety. Our children deserve nothing less."
