Gov't launches study on economic revitalization for region hit by Jeju Air crash

The government on Monday launched a comprehensive research project aimed at studying ways to revitalize the economy in the broader southwestern region affected by an aviation accident in late December. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said it held a briefing marking the launch of the project aimed at reviewing structured economic support for the city of Gwangju and South Jeolla Province following the air disaster that occurred at Muan International Airport. On Dec. 29, a Jeju Air plane carrying 181 people from Bangkok belly-landed and exploded at the airport, claiming 179 lives. It was recorded as the worst aviation accident for a South Korean airline on the country's soil. A subsequent shutdown of the airport had dealt a blow to local businesses and the regional tourism industry, resulting in direct and indirect sales losses. The project will be led by researchers from the Korean Regional Development Association and will be carried out for six months.
