Key Advancements in the Updated Specification Document
The expanded specification adds 100G coherent optical interfaces designed to accelerate deployment flexibility, cost-efficiency, and scalability in diverse operator environments:

  • 100G Single-Fiber BiDi Point-to-Point: Enabling compact, cost-effective bi-directional links for access and aggregation and networks.
  • 100G Dual-Fiber Point-to-Multipoint Aggregation: Supporting high-capacity aggregation across ROADM-based architectures and regional networks.
  • 100G Single-Fiber BiDi Point-to-Multipoint PON Overlay: Providing dedicated coherent wavelengths to coexist seamlessly with legacy PON deployments, extending bandwidth without infrastructure overbuilds.

These additions complement existing 400G XR Optics specifications, establishing a cohesive framework that scales from access to metro and core application.

The new specifications will be featured at the Open XR Optics Forum Symposium during ECOC 2025 in Copenhagen, on Tuesday, September 30, from 10:40–11:50 am on the ECOC show floor. Attendees will gain insights into deployment over existing infrastructure, operational experiences, technical details, multi-vendor interoperability validation, and the roadmap for coherent pluggable innovation.

The Open XR Optics Forum continues to drive innovation and standardization to better enable the wide scale deployment of coherent pluggable transceiver technology in a variety of host devices across a variety of network applications.
