Actress Hwang Jung-eum on trial for embezzling $31 million for crypto investment

Actor Hwang Jung-eum is standing trial for embezzling funds from her family-owned entertainment agency to invest in cryptocurrency. The Jeju District Court held the first hearing on Thursday for Hwang, who was indicted without detention on charges of embezzlement. According to prosecutors, Hwang is accused of embezzling around 4.3 billion won ($3.1 million) from a family-run company in which she holds a 100 percent stake. Of that, about 4.2 billion won was allegedly used to purchase virtual assets. Her legal counsel admitted to all charges, explaining, “The defendant made the investment with the intention of growing the company.
