Study shows potential of the Canopy Remote Therapeutic Monitoring Platform to enable proactive adherence and toxicity management in patients receiving oral anti-cancer medications

NEW YORK, Oct. 9, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Canopy, the leading Enterprise AI Platform for Oncology, today announced findings on the potential for EHR-integrated Remote Therapeutic Monitoring (RTM) to enable practices with medically integrated pharmacies (MIPs) to meet or exceed ASCO/NCODA standards for oral anti-cancer medication (OAM). While traditional approaches rely on phone-based OAM management, the Canopy RTM platform provides an easily scalable, technology-enhanced approach.

Application of the remote therapeutic monitoring (RTM) platform to optimize adherence and manage toxicity of oral anti-cancer medications (OAM) (Abstract #594, Poster Board #S7), was accepted for poster presentation at the American Society of Clinical Oncology Quality Care Symposium at the Marriott Marquis Chicago in Chicago, Illinois. The poster will be presented on Friday, October 10, from 12 - 1:15 PM CT in the Grand Horizon Ballroom.

The study evaluated patients receiving oral oncology therapies across five community practices with MIPs. Patients were invited to enroll in the Canopy ePRO-based RTM system and asked to report missed doses and symptoms on a weekly basis. Key findings presented include:

  • Sustained patient engagement: Within three months, 1,857 patients on OAM enrolled in the Canopy RTM platform and submitted a median of seven reports, indicating sustained patient engagement across community practices.

  • Extent and causes of missed doses: 44% of patients reported no missed doses, and 28.3% of patients reported missing at least one dose, most often due to forgetting, clinical instruction to skip the dose, or issues filling the prescriptions. 34.7% of patients requested a refill through the Canopy RTM platform.

  • Patients with a higher symptom burden reported more missed doses: Weakness/fatigue, pain, diarrhea, and nausea were reported most often. This observation underscores the potential for increased adherence with improved symptom management protocols.

"Remote Therapeutic Monitoring gives us critical insights into why patients on oral oncology therapies miss doses and the symptoms they experience between office visits," said Shruti Sharma, DO, lead author, hematologist, and medical oncologist at Texas Oncology-San Antonio Medical Center. "With further study, this approach could support earlier interventions, lead to improved outcomes, and, for patients living in remote or underserved areas, reduce barriers to care."

"Meeting ASCO/NCODA oral-anti-cancer standards is critical yet challenging for many practices. Phone calls are difficult to scale and only capture a fraction of what patients experience between visits," said Michael Kolodziej, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Canopy and study co-author. "Remote Therapeutic Monitoring supports a clearer understanding of each patient's experience in a way that is feasible for community practices to implement."

Previous studies highlighting the potential impact of Canopy's platform on oncology patient experience in real-world settings have demonstrated:

  • 45% improvement in treatment persistence at three months1 [ASCO, 2022]
  • 22% reduction in ER visits/hospitalizations per 100 patient months2 [ASCO, 2022]
  • 88% patient engagement sustained at six months3 [JCO, 2022]

At the 2024 American Society of Hematology (ASH) meeting, Canopy presented data highlighting:

  • 37% reduction in treatment discontinuation at three months4 [ASH, 2024]
  • Improved early detection of toxicities with bispecific antibody therapies5 [ASH, 2024]
