What happened?

In early September 2025, PNC Financial Services allegedly experienced a significant data breach that compromised the personal information of approximately 740,000 customers, according to a proposed class action filed in federal court. The lawsuit alleges that an internal error led PNC to disclose sensitive customer data to another client without authorization. Shortly afterward, a threat actor identifying as "Market Exchange" posted on the dark web, claiming to have stolen a far greater volume of customer data from PNC's systems.

PNC acknowledged that unauthorized individuals accessed its IT network but maintains that the internal disclosure and the claims on the dark web are unrelated. PNC also stated there is no evidence supporting the existence of a data breach involving stolen data on the dark web.

The compromised data reportedly includes customers' names, Social Security numbers, and contact information.
