Launched on 12/03/2010, the Invesco S&P MidCap 400 GARP ETF (GRPM) is a smart beta exchange traded fund offering broad exposure to the Style Box - Mid Cap Blend category of the market. What Are Smart Beta ETFs?The ETF industry has traditionally been dominated by products based on market capitalization weighted indexes that are designed to represent the market or a particular segment of the market.Investors who believe in market efficiency should consider market cap indexes, as they replicate market returns in a low-cost, convenient, and transparent way.If you're the kind of investor who would rather try and beat the market through good stock selection, then smart beta funds are your best choice; this fund class is known for tracking non-cap weighted strategies.Based on specific fundamental characteristics, or a combination of such, these indexes attempt to pick stocks that have a better chance of risk-return performance. This area offers many different investment choices, such as simplest equal-weighting, fundamental weighting and volatility/momentum based weighting methodologies; however, not all of these strategies can deliver superior results.Fund Sponsor & IndexThe fund is sponsored by Invesco. It has amassed assets over $460.58 million, making it one of the average sized ETFs in the Style Box - Mid Cap Blend. This particular fund, before fees and expenses, seeks to match the performance of the S&P MIDCAP 400 GARP INDEX .The S&P MidCap 400 GARP Index seeks to track companies with consistent fundamental growth, reasonable valuation, solid financial strength, and strong earning power.Cost & Other ExpensesWhen considering an ETF's total return, expense ratios are an important factor. And, cheaper funds can significantly outperform their more expensive cousins in the long term if all other factors remain equal. With on par with most peer products in the space, this ETF has annual operating expenses of 0.35%.It has a 12-month trailing dividend yield of 0.77%.Sector Exposure and Top HoldingsEven though ETFs offer diversified exposure that minimizes single stock risk, investors should also look at the actual holdings inside the fund. Luckily, most ETFs are very transparent products that disclose their holdings on a daily basis. For GRPM, it has heaviest allocation in the Consumer Discretionary sector --about 25.70% of the portfolio --while Energy and Healthcare round out the top three.Looking at individual holdings, Celsius Holdings Inc (CELH) accounts for about 4.55% of total assets, followed by Lantheus Holdings Inc (LNTH) and Halozyme Therapeutics Inc (HALO).Its top 10 holdings account for approximately 28.27% of GRPM's total assets under management.Performance and RiskThe ETF has lost about -8.41% so far this year and is down about -9.60% in the last one year (as of 05/06/2025). In the past 52-week period, it has traded between $90.38 and $126.41.The fund has a beta of 1.10 and standard deviation of 22.18% for the trailing three-year period. With about 60 holdings, it effectively diversifies company-specific risk.AlternativesInvesco S&P MidCap 400 GARP ETF is a reasonable option for investors seeking to outperform the Style Box - Mid Cap Blend segment of the market. However, there are other ETFs in the space which investors could consider.Vanguard Mid-Cap ETF (VO) tracks CRSP US Mid Cap Index and the iShares Core S&P Mid-Cap ETF (IJH) tracks S&P MidCap 400 Index. Vanguard Mid-Cap ETF has $74.16 billion in assets, iShares Core S&P Mid-Cap ETF has $89.34 billion. VO has an expense ratio of 0.04% and IJH charges 0.05%.Investors looking for cheaper and lower-risk options should consider traditional market cap weighted ETFs that aim to match the returns of the Style Box - Mid Cap Blend.Bottom LineTo learn more about this product and other ETFs, screen for products that match your investment objectives and read articles on latest developments in the ETF investing universe, please visit Zacks ETF Center.Want key ETF info delivered straight to your inbox?Zacks’ free Fund Newsletter will brief you on top news and analysis, as well as top-performing ETFs, each week.Get it free >>Want the latest recommendations from Zacks Investment Research?
