EL SEGUNDO, Calif., Oct. 6, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- A federal jury in the Eastern District of Texas has awarded $78.5 million to Anonymous Media Research Holdings, LLC (AMR) in a patent infringement case against Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. and Samsung Electronics America, Inc. The case, Anonymous Media Research Holdings, LLC v. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. and Samsung Electronics America, Inc., No. 2:23-cv-00439, was tried in the Marshall Division of the Eastern District of Texas. The asserted patents were U.S. Patent No. 10,719,848 and U.S. Patent No. 10,963,911, both covering systems for monitoring and measuring media use through automated content recognition. The jury found infringement of Claims 1, 5, 9, and 13 of the '848 patent and Claim 1 of the '911 patent, and it rejected Samsung's invalidity defenses.

Filed in 2023, the lawsuit alleged that Samsung's smart TVs incorporated software that performed patented methods of identifying media content and gathering usage data without authorization. Samsung denied infringement and argued that the asserted claims were invalid. The jury ultimately sided with AMR, awarding the precise amount of damages the company sought and confirming that its intellectual property rights were enforceable.

Cyberonix Experts, LLC (Cyberonix) supported AMR in the litigation, with Dr. Sam Malek providing courtroom testimony and Dr. Eric Yuan contributing as a consultant whose technical analysis informed trial strategy. Because the patents involved software embedded in consumer electronics, jurors relied on expert analysis to understand how the accused systems operated.

  • Dr. Sam Malek, professor of software engineering at UC Irvine, testified for AMR. He explained how Samsung's smart TV systems process media recognition and how those operations align with the patents' claim language. His testimony emphasized system architecture and data flows, helping jurors connect claim elements to real-world implementations.
  • Dr. Eric Yuan, adjunct professor of computer science at George Mason University and a researcher in distributed and large-scale software systems, served as a consultant. His analysis contributed to expert reports and informed trial preparation.

The ruling underscores the legal and commercial importance of automatic content recognition, a technology widely used in advertising, audience measurement, and digital media analytics.

Patent cases involving software often hinge on whether claimed methods can be explained as concrete implementations rather than abstract concepts. Here, the jury's verdict illustrates how detailed expert analysis can guide fact-finders in evaluating validity and infringement.
