Licel Joins GlobalPlatform to Support Digital Security Standards Development
Licel brings its mobile security expertise to contribute to the ongoing development of GlobalPlatform security standards.
LONDON, May 7, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Licel, a global leader in mobile channel security solutions, has announced its membership of GlobalPlatform. Licel's participation in the renowned technical standards organization underscores the company's commitment to advancing security awareness and protocols in sectors such as mobile banking and ID services.
GlobalPlatform is building the foundation for a secure, trusted, and interoperable digital future. By establishing and driving adoption of leading-edge standards, GlobalPlatform empowers governments, organizations and industries to deliver secure devices and innovative services with confidence, enabling users to engage in a digital ecosystem built on privacy, security, and trust.
Licel has long aligned its development with GlobalPlatform standards. The company's first open-source product, JCardSim - a Java Card simulator - has enabled countless companies and individual developers to quickly prototype and test their applications. The winner of Oracle's Duke's Choice Award in 2013, JCardSim has had a big impact on a variety of everyday digital activities that rely on smart cards and is taught in universities around the world. In 2017, a special JCardSim module was released with support for the GlobalPlatform Card API and GlobalPlatform Card Secure Channel functionality, further underlining Licel's commitment to compatibility with established standards.
"The Licel team has extensive experience in building operating systems for smart cards," said Mikhail Dudarev, co-founder and CTO of Licel. "That's why GlobalPlatform standards have always been very relevant and important to us, from the very beginning of our journey. Our latest product, the Licel vTEE, is a Virtual Trusted Execution Environment that enables businesses to run Trusted Applications on both Android and iOS. The Licel vTEE is evaluated and approved by EMVCo for both platforms, according to the EMVCo SBMP TEE specification, which itself is based on the GlobalPlatform Device Technology specification, including the TEE System Architecture standard. This history of creating industry-leading security solutions with GlobalPlatform requirements in mind makes the partnership between our companies even more special. It feels like the logical next step on our journey."
As an Observer Member, Licel will have access to GlobalPlatform meetings and the opportunity to engage in discussions around future standards and specifications. Licel can share observations on mobile threats and industry trends, particularly as they relate to securing mobile channels across sectors such as financial services and digital identity.
"We are pleased to welcome Licel as a member of GlobalPlatform," said Ana Tavares Lattibeaudiere, Executive Director of GlobalPlatform. "Their history of creating mobile channel protection solutions that align with GlobalPlatform specifications makes them an ideal fit within our community."
