Mezzacorona Group releases 5th Sustainability Report: A 40-year commitment to nature and responsible winemaking
120 years of heritage, 40 years of sustainability: Mezzacorona halves Co2, lowers footprint and strengthens its community impact.
TRENTO, Italy, Oct. 16, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Mezzacorona, leading Italian wine producer from Trentino, Italy, presented its fifth Sustainability Report. The report showcases significant progress in environmental stewardship and community impact. The Group has halved its CO₂ emissions, achieving a calculated organizational carbon footprint of 1.04 kg CO₂ per bottle of wine - 42% lower than the industry average of 1.8 kg CO₂ per bottle1, setting a benchmark for sustainable winemaking.
Over the decades, Mezzacorona has invested more than $20 million in sustainability initiatives, reinforcing its mission to balance agricultural tradition with environmental responsibility. All Mezzacorona's Sustainability Reports highlighted the Group's progress on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors and were prepared in line with GRI Standards, the world's most widely adopted framework for sustainability reporting, and underscores Mezzacorona's ongoing commitment to sustainability, transparency, and responsible growth.
The Group hasstrategicallyprioritized8ofthe17SustainableDevelopmentGoals most relevant to its business model in line with the United Nations' Global Action Program for Sustainable Development. Key achievements include:
- Goal 2: Zero Hunger. Mezzacorona advances sustainable agriculture across its vineyards, prioritizing eco-friendly practices and soil health. The cooperative has fully adopted mating disruption for pest control, eliminated conventional insecticides, and phased out unsafe plant protection products through research partnerships. In Sicily, irrigation systems were upgraded from drip to sub-irrigation, improving drought resilience and reducing evaporation. Agronomists made 7,200 vineyard visits last season, supporting members with organic fertilization, careful water management, and precision crop protection.
- Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being. Health and safety are central to Mezzacorona's cooperative values. Employees receive extensive annual training, while cooperative members benefit from agronomic and safety instruction.
International certifications - including IFS Food, Organic, SOStain Sicilia, Equalitas, and SQNPI - guarantee product quality and safety. The Group also promotes responsible wine consumption as an ambassador for "Wine in Moderation." - Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. Water stewardship is a cornerstone of Mezzacorona's sustainability efforts. Process water use has dropped 21% since 2019, and all production sites feature advanced purification plants consistently achieving zero non-conformities.
- Goals 7, 12 & 13: Affordable and Clean Energy, Responsible Consumption and Production, Climate Action. Mezzacorona has made major strides in decarbonization and circular economy practices. Renewable energy now accounts for 51% of total consumption, including 6% generated on-site. Natural cooling from underground cellars reduces energy demand, while LED and smart-control lighting halves electricity use. Packaging has been redesigned, eliminating non-recyclable caps and reducing cardboard by 17% and steel by 18%. Waste is fully separated, recovered, and validated for organized reuse.
- Goals 8 & 9: Decent Work and Economic Growth, Industry Innovation and Infrastructure. As a cooperative, Mezzacorona fosters fair value sharing and community vitality. Shareholder remuneration increased 2.4%, while net debt fell 14.4% over two years. Local suppliers represent a third of the supply chain. The Group created 58 new jobs in 2023, with most filled by young professionals, and offered 22 sustainability-focused internships. Training totaled 1,329 hours, averaging 7.8 per employee. Cultural engagement remains strong: the Cittadella del Vino welcomed over 40,000 visitors and hosted more than 160 events, reinforcing wine culture and regional tourism.
