New Survey Reveals Tech-savvy Virginia Pet Owners Monitor Their Pet's Wellness Digitally--but Majority Are Skipping an Important Preventive Care Habit
VANCOUVER, Wash., June 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- In celebration of its 70th anniversary, Banfield Pet Hospital, the nation's leading provider of high-quality preventive care, surveyed 5,000 owners across the U.S. to uncover state-by-state pet owner superlatives.
According to these new findings, owners in Virginia are among the most organized when it comes to tracking their pet's health:
- Virginians ranked the No. 3 most likely to use notes, a list or a spreadsheet to track information related to their pet's health.
- Virginia pet owners are also among the top five states most likely to use their veterinarian's app to track/schedule appointments or access their pet's medical notes and records.
Further, nearly one in five (18%) Virginia pet owners use calendar apps to never miss their pet's vaccine due date or wellness visit, 11% use telehealth services, and 9% use an app to track their pet's activity and exercise.
While clearly tech proficient, Virginia owners may need to go back to basics—as nearly nine in 10 (86%) say they don't brush their pet's teeth at home. This is particularly concerning because:
- Bad breath is more than unpleasant—it can also be a sign of dental disease in pets, which can be associated with oral pain, excessive drooling, bleeding, and reluctance to eat or drink.
- Periodontal disease, a more serious form of dental disease, may also be linked to other health issues, including heart and kidney disease.
- Routine at-home dental care has been shown to be a very important aspect of good oral health, along with annual professional dental cleanings.
With Banfield Pet Hospital locations across the state, pet owners in Virginia have convenient access to preventive care that supports these evolving needs.
