Pet Lovers and Veterinary Professionals in NYC Unite to Address Animal Overpopulation and Affordability Crisis

NEW YORK, Oct. 28, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- This fall, pet lovers and veterinary professionals in NYC are coming together to address the overpopulation of animals in shelters and the lack of affordable options for spaying and neutering.

As the cost of living and pet care rises, animal shelters across the country are at critical capacity dealing with an influx of surrendered pets, oftentimes due to the price tag associated with their care. An estimated 5.8 million animals filled up facilities last year, according to the nonprofit Shelter Animals Count's national database. The main reason for pet surrender? people just can't afford their care.

Spaying and neutering can help by:

  • Reducing the number of unwanted litters.

  • Preventing diseases like pyometra (an infection in the uterus), and cancers in male and female pets that are costly to treat (sometimes thousands of dollars).

  • Reducing unwanted behaviors like urine marking and aggression, often reasons people give up their pets.

Organized by NYC-based non-profit organization Positive Tails, the second annual SPAY & NEUTER-A-THON will take place throughout November and December to provide free or low-cost surgeries to hundreds of local animals.

"Last year our goal was to partner with 10 veterinary hospitals in NYC to perform 100 spay/neuter surgeries. I'm so proud to say the community came together and we exceeded that goal, partnering with 30 hospitals and conducting 343 surgeries," said Positive Tails Executive Director Beth Gould.

"We are hoping to increase the number of hospital partners this year and exceed last year's total number of surgeries so we can make an even greater difference in the health and well-being of NYC's animals," she added.

Participating veterinary hospitals either provide surgeries for free or at a significantly reduced rate. The veterinary hospitals are provided a Positive Tails volunteer who will match applicants with hospitals at available dates/times, and is on hand to coordinate and keep things running smoothly.

In addition, anyone can sponsor the cost of these surgeries so donations are welcome and needed. Applications to receive the spay/neuter care are available at www.positivetails.org or write to fixnyc@positivetails.org.
