Ownwell and Spurs Team Up to Honor San Antonio Community Champions and Support Property Tax Education
AUSTIN, Texas, May 13, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- In Texas, rising property taxes are placing added pressure on homeowners. According to a recent survey from Ownwell, an Austin-based property tax appeal platform, 71% of Texans say their property tax bill exceeded what they had planned for, adding stress and financial strain to many households. Ownwell's research across seven major Texas counties also revealed that only 28% of homeowners filed an appeal last year, highlighting a clear need for more accessible education around the appeals process.
To address this gap, Ownwell partnered with the San Antonio Spurs to launch a community-focused campaign aimed at both education and recognition. Through their "Community Champions" program, which ran throughout the 2024–2025 NBA season, the Spurs and Ownwell recognized San Antonio residents making a meaningful difference in their neighborhoods. Honorees were celebrated during halftime at home games and awarded $1,000 toward their property tax bills, thanks to Ownwell.
"The Spurs organization is deeply committed to our San Antonio community and neighbors," said Frank Miceli, Chief Commercial Officer for Spurs Sports & Entertainment. "This partnership with Ownwell gave us the opportunity to support families during a time when many are feeling financial pressure. We take pride in partnering with companies like Ownwell that share our values of service and community impact."
One of this year's honorees, Francesca B., is a single mother of two who volunteers with the Boy Scouts, school committees, athletic clubs, and the San Antonio Food Bank.
"Being selected as a Community Champion was a blessing," said Francesca. "The financial support made a real difference for my family, and I'm proud to be aligned with Ownwell and the Spurs—two organizations that truly care about our city."
Local Support Through Education
In addition to recognizing local heroes, Ownwell hosted free property tax education events across San Antonio throughout the season. These sessions helped residents understand how appraisals work, when and how to file an appeal, and what exemptions may be available to them.
"Every homeowner in Texas deserves a fair shot at lowering their property tax bill," said Sam Sosa, Senior Property Tax Manager at Ownwell. "Through these events, we've helped families understand their rights and navigate the system with confidence."
There's a significant opportunity for impact: in 2024, over 497,000 homeowners in Bexar County didn't appeal their property taxes, and if they had, they could have collectively saved more than $134 million. So far, Ownwell has helped reduce tax bills for more than 12,000 Bexar County properties, resulting in over $3.8 million in savings. That number is expected to more than double by the end of this month.
What Homeowners Should Know
With the May 15th appeal deadline fast approaching, Ownwell encourages Texas homeowners to take action. Here are three key reminders:
- Learn the process. Understanding your rights and how the property tax system works is the first step to saving money.
- Track your property value. Keep an eye on your annual appraisal and tax bill to spot unexpected increases.
- Get support. Whether it's through Ownwell, your local appraisal district, or a legal professional, don't hesitate to ask for help if your property valuation seems too high.
